On screen Paul is drawn without the grey hair and beard he sports in the source comics, giving the animated version a somewhat cleaner, younger look. A small detail in his office, a US Army Commendation Medal, hints at a stretch of military service or a close tie to the armed forces.

Paul comes across as gentle, earnest, and prone to self-doubt. He worries constantly about whether an ordinary man can belong in the orbit of a superhero family, measuring himself against Nolan and fearing he will never match up. His nerves show plainly in small moments, from unease at the idea of teleporting to open terror when he learns Mark intends to fly their car to Chicago. For all that anxiety, he is patient and supportive of Debbie, willing to stand beside her and her children even when the stakes clearly frighten him.

Paul first notices Debbie sinking into grief after Nolan's true nature is exposed and he leaves the planet, and the two grow close while working listings together. Their relationship deepens through the second season, from an awkward Italian dinner where Debbie admits she has not dated in two decades to a quieter evening when she reveals that her children have powers and that her supposedly dead husband was Omni-Man. Rattled, Paul briefly doubts he can handle such a life, but Debbie reassures him, and their romance carries on, interrupted at one point by Mark and Oliver walking in on them.

He stays close through the crises that follow. During the Invincible War he urges Debbie to leave his home for safety, a choice that spares her when Movincihawk later attacks her house, and he shares one last family dinner before Nolan, Mark, and Oliver head off to war. The strain eventually proves too much, and over the months of the Viltrumite War he and Debbie end their relationship while remaining friends and colleagues. Even afterward he keeps looking out for her, encouraging her to visit Oliver in space and offering to mind the house while she is gone.
