Venus Power, Make Up

This is the first change-phrase that Minako Aino relies on to take up her identity as Sailor Venus. Across the franchise the trigger item shifts by medium: the printed story and the Crystal retelling hand her a personalized pen, the 90s broadcast gives her a plainer Transformation Pen, and the live-action series swaps in the Jewelry Star Bracelet. It made its earliest showings in the tenth chapter of the comic, the thirty-sixth broadcast episode, and the eighth installment of Crystal, and it is later upgraded to Venus Star Power, Make Up.

In the printed version the effect is nearly instant. She first speaks the words in the tenth chapter so she can travel to the moon alongside the other guardians, and by the following chapter she calls them again while gripping the pen carried over from her Sailor V days. Raising it overhead is enough to snap the Venus uniform into place.

The televised sequence draws things out. She thrusts the pen skyward and long ribbons of golden stars spill from it, coiling around her into a spiral. Those stars sink briefly into the floor, then surge upward again to sheathe her entirely before she turns into her closing stance.

The Crystal retelling opens with the pen aimed toward the planet Venus. She lets it go, her fingernails flash gold, and her body reads as a deep blue silhouette against a gold field. Streaming ribbons dress her while her back is turned, and she pivots around as the planetary sign lights her brow and the tiara settles into place.

The live-action take keys off the Jewelry Star Bracelet, which unfolds from its compact sealed shape as the gems begin to glow. A brush past her ear tints her nails orange and calls up her leotard, then a run of leaps and twirls lets golden ribbons build her skirt and collar. Ghostly duplicates of herself strike poses around her as gloves, shoes, bow, and chain belt appear, a glittering breeze lengthens and lightens her hair, silhouetted gymnasts trail her hair beads and blonde color into being, and a final pose seals the change.

The phrase belongs solely to Minako Aino in her civilian identity of Sailor Venus. The DiC English localization shortened the spoken command down to simply Venus Power.
