Overview

Sailor Moon's strongest armament takes the shape of a staff that appears once Usagi earns the ability to reach her Eternal form. Its name traces back to an older French word for a head ornament, one that translates into English as tiara. The weapon shows up throughout the manga, the 90s anime, the Crystal films, and a number of stage musicals.

Function

In the anime the Tiare takes shape as a white rod touched with red, crowned by a jeweled sphere ringed with gold and flanked by red wing-like flourishes. It formed out of the Moon Kaleido Scope when the nine other Super Guardians pooled their power at Sailor Saturn's urging, and the change became permanent once Usagi could transform straight into Eternal Sailor Moon. Its strength climbs sharply when joined with the Holy Moon Chalice, becoming the Moon Power Tiare to unleash the far stronger Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss.

The two adaptations differ in one detail: the manga fixes the Silver Crystal to the staff, whereas the anime tops it with a plain red gem. Either way the weapon drives Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss along with the many other attacks tied to it.

Notable Users

Sailor Moon is the primary wielder, using the Tiare in her Eternal form and again as she nears her Neo-Queen Serenity self, where she and the Silver Crystal purify the Sailor Quartet at the close of the Dream arc. Galactica Planet Attack snaps the weapon during the Stars arc while Galaxia controls the other Senshi, but Usagi reforms it moments later through Silver Moon Crystal Power Therapy Kiss.

In the manga only, Eternal Sailor Chibi Moon carries her own slightly smaller Tiare during "Chibiusa's Picture Diary," teaming with Usagi for Starlight Honeymoon Double Therapy Kiss. It stands as the single instance of Chibiusa holding any weapon in her Eternal form. The Crystal films likewise show Usagi summoning the staff to defeat Queen Nehelenia and, at her coronation, to purify the Amazoness Quartet.
