Askeladd rampages through the royal hall while Canute reveals the slaughter is a calculated performance. As Thorfinn finally forces his way inside and cries out, the prince seizes the moment of distraction to drive his blade through his own retainer.
Screaming from within the hall pulls Thorfinn to his feet outside. Chieftains bolt for the exits as he leaps to a window and finds Askeladd carving through the men indoors. Baffled and furious, he draws his blades and shoves toward the entrance, which the fleeing nobles and arriving reinforcements have jammed shut. Inside, Askeladd taunts his attackers as the King of Britannia, inviting anyone eager for death to step up.
Canute directs the soldiers to overwhelm Askeladd with numbers, seal the doors, and quietly move Sweyn's covered corpse out of sight. When Thorkell grumbles about a rival stealing his prey, Canute corrects him: the killer has not lost his mind. He reasons that Askeladd, forced to pick between sparing Wales and sparing Canute, chose to shoulder the blame for the king's death by feigning insanity, buying safety for both. Canute offers Thorkell the finishing strike, but the giant sits back down to eat and insists the duty belongs to Canute, the man Askeladd serves.
Askeladd keeps mocking his foes as filthy Danes. Floki charges in, raging that this act reignites the war with England, and hurls the slur son of a slave. Askeladd presses his sword down until Floki buckles to his knees, promising him the privilege of kissing his boot before dying. Thorfinn finally breaks through and shouts his name; Askeladd wheels around and orders him to keep back. In that unguarded instant, Canute buries his sword in Askeladd's chest as Thorfinn watches, stunned.
Thorfinn witnesses the massacre unfolding inside the hall and fights toward the doors. Canute exposes Askeladd's frenzy as a deliberate performance meant to absorb guilt for murdering the king and protect both Canute and Wales. Thorkell refuses the killing blow, arguing it falls to Canute as Askeladd's master. Askeladd humiliates Floki, driving him to his knees. With Askeladd's attention snapped toward Thorfinn, Canute runs him through near the heart.
This is the fifty-third installment of the manga and sits within Volume 8. Its events were dramatized in Episode 24 of the anime. The chapter's epigraph comes from Canute, who spells out the logic behind Askeladd's apparent madness.
