Chapter 52: The Hero Returns

Askeladd urges Sweyn to abandon the Welsh invasion, arguing that after a decade of war the land, people, and army need rest, and that Wales offers treacherous ground and little plunder. The chieftains largely agree, and Floki privately admires how cleverly Askeladd voices the majority's worries to court their favor. When Floki insists the aim is suppression, not conquest, Askeladd offers to go himself as a negotiator who could bring the Welsh to heel without bloodshed. Canute, meanwhile, wonders why his vassal would risk his entire careful plan over this one land.

Playing the magnanimous ruler before his lords, Sweyn descends from the dais, praises Askeladd's honest counsel as a treasure, and grasps his shoulders in thanks. Leaning close, he whispers the real bargain: he cares nothing for Wales and will spare it if Askeladd brings him Canute's head. He adds that he has looked into Askeladd's origins and heard his mother was a slave, which would explain his fixation, since slaves are Wales's only export of value. The insult to his mother breaks Askeladd's calm.

Narrowing his eyes, Askeladd declares that Sweyn does not have the face of a king and that the crown has no business resting on so ugly a head, then repeats the insult loudly for all to hear. As guards draw their swords, he orders them to hold, since the king stands within his reach, and unsheathes his own blade. Canute, grasping the plan, commands Thorkell not to interfere. Refusing the king's offer of forgiveness, Askeladd announces that Askeladd is only a nickname, reveals his true name as Lucius Artorius Castus, proclaims himself the rightful King of Britannia, and strikes off Sweyn's head, the crown rolling loose across the floor. Understanding at once, Canute silently thanks him, then loudly orders the men to cut Askeladd down for regicide, cutting off Floki's own command. Outside, Thorfinn begins to hear the uproar from the hall.

Askeladd publicly argues against invading Wales, winning the chieftains' sympathy. Sweyn feigns gratitude, then privately demands Canute's head in exchange for sparing Wales and insults Askeladd's slave mother. Enraged, Askeladd insults the king before the court, declares his true name Lucius Artorius Castus and himself King of Britannia, and beheads Sweyn. Canute grasps the scheme and orders Askeladd killed for regicide as Thorfinn hears the commotion outside.

Titled Eiyuu Fukkatsu in Japanese, this fifty-second chapter continues Volume 8 and was adapted in Episode 24. The assassination of King Sweyn is a pivotal turning point of the Prologue arc, delivering Askeladd's calculated sacrifice to shield Wales and place Canute in command. Its revelation of his descent from Lucius Artorius Castus ties his final act to the hero-legend that shaped his childhood.
