Overview

Koichi Hirose carries Echoes, a Stand defined by its rare capacity to change shape across distinct stages he can switch between. Its origin was strange from the start: pierced by the Arrow, Koichi lacked the fighting spirit to survive and should have died, but Josuke revived him with Crazy Diamond in time, and Koichi emerged holding a Stand that was at first completely powerless.

That earliest state is a large egg dotted with swirling spots along its underside, usually drawn white with green markings. Fans call it Act 0, though it was never labeled that in the manga or anime. As an egg it can neither move nor act, and it only breaks into its first true form when Koichi calls on it during his clash with Tamami Kobayashi.

Mechanics

ACT1 hatches as a larva-like creature with a shelled head, tiny arms, small wheels, and a long serpentine tail tipped with a rattle. It obeys orders with only faint growls and no real character of its own. Physically it is weak and slow, its punches unable to even bruise Tamami, but it reaches farther than any other stage, stretching roughly fifty meters from Koichi, which makes it an ideal scout. Its power lies in writing: it inscribes words onto any surface or body, and katakana onomatopoeia produce a matching sound while kanji sentences sway the target's feelings. Koichi once steadied his despairing mother by placing the plea to believe in him directly onto her. The sounds feel as though they rise from within the target, grow louder the longer they last, and can be shrugged off by sufficient willpower.

ACT2 develops during the fight with Yukako, becoming a smaller humanoid clad in striped shell armor with a high collar and a detachable stinger on its tail. Its sound trick sharpens: it forms a single onomatopoeia at its tail tip, and touching that written effect triggers the corresponding phenomenon on whoever or whatever made contact. A wind burst blows in from one, another hurls the toucher a great distance, one makes an object rubbery and bouncing, and another radiates searing heat. This form also shows a sharp jump in speed, hinting at what the next stage brings.

ACT3 emerges against Sheer Heart Attack once ACT2 proves too frail. Fully humanoid and now sentient, it addresses Koichi politely as Master while abruptly cursing in English like a rapper. Its reach shrinks considerably, but it is quick and notably stronger, though still outmatched by a Stand of Killer Queen's caliber. Its signature move, 3 Freeze, drives up a target's weight with a punch, effectively pinning it: Sheer Heart Attack was forced down into the pavement, and Kira likened the load to dozens of kilograms on one hand. The effect covers only one thing at a time, breaks if the target strays beyond five meters, and grows heavier the closer that target sits.

Notable Users

Echoes answers to Koichi Hirose alone, and Araki built its evolving design around Koichi's own growth, shaping ACT1 like alien larva and later stages into steadily more capable figures. Across Diamond is Unbreakable, Koichi leans on ACT1 for reconnaissance, on ACT2 for direct confrontation, and on the outspoken ACT3 for its crushing 3 Freeze. Echoes also reappears briefly during Vento Aureo, still at his side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Echoes' Act 3 form so different from Act 1 and Act 2?

Echoes' ACT3 form emerges once ACT2 proves too fragile against Sheer Heart Attack. Unlike the earlier stages, ACT3 is fully humanoid and sentient, addresses Koichi Hirose as Master, and trades range for greater speed and strength, gaining the crushing 3 Freeze technique.

What is the difference between Echoes Act 1 and Act 2?

Echoes ACT1 is a weak, slow larva-like creature that reaches roughly fifty meters and writes words that create sounds or sway emotions. ACT2 is a smaller, faster humanoid in shell armor whose power narrows to a single onomatopoeia formed at its tail, triggering effects like wind, distance-throwing, bounciness, or heat on contact.

Is Echoes also known as Reverb?

Yes, Echoes' listed English name is Reverb, and the Stand itself is named after the Pink Floyd song Echoes.

Who wields the Stand Echoes in Diamond is Unbreakable?

Echoes belongs to Koichi Hirose, who relies on its different ACT forms for reconnaissance, direct combat, and the crushing 3 Freeze attack throughout Diamond is Unbreakable.

How did Koichi Hirose get his Stand Echoes?

Koichi Hirose was pierced by the Stand Arrow and should have died from lacking the fighting spirit to survive, but Josuke Higashikata revived him with Crazy Diamond just in time, leaving Koichi with Echoes, a Stand that started out completely powerless.
