King Crimson

Character

King Crimson is the fearsome Stand of Diavolo, the hidden boss of Passione in Vento Aureo, and one of the series' most notorious powers. It pairs brutal close-range strength with the ability to erase short spans of time, letting its master skip past danger and land killing blows nobody sees coming.

Overview

Built to roughly match Diavolo's frame yet often looming larger, this humanoid Stand is wrapped in a raised diagonal lattice broken only at the face, joints, and hands. Its sunken, sclera-less eyes carry the same fractured pupils as its user, and a second smaller face, called Epitaph, protrudes from its forehead, grinding its teeth and echoing the main face's moods. The design borrows from the conjoined mutant Kuato in the film Total Recall, and true to its name it is colored a deep red with lime-green eyes.

The Stand carries Diavolo's whole temperament, since he routinely speaks through it, and its features tend toward anger, breaking into a wild grin only when events swing his way. It is also said to hiss like a snake when summoned, and Diavolo's split personality Doppio shares partial use of it.

Mechanics

Physically it hits with precise, full-power strikes rather than the rapid flurries of other close-range Stands, striking hard enough to lop off limbs, impale a body in an instant, or crack stone. It moves fast as well, but its reach is short at only a couple of meters, and its poor permanence makes hiding its user's identity from a crowd difficult.

Its signature ability erases a frame of time lasting up to around ten seconds. During that span Diavolo alone stays aware and can adjust his actions, while everyone else keeps moving yet remembers nothing afterward. The cause of events disappears but the outcome still lands, so people simply find themselves in the aftermath: a water bottle ends up in a companion's hand though no one recalls it being passed. Diavolo and the Stand also turn intangible while time is erased, letting attacks phase through them, though this bars him from striking back with anything but his own blood, the sole thing he can still touch.

Its partner power, Epitaph, reads several tens of seconds into the future and shows it as an image, usually rendered across the user's hair. The visions are certain to happen and can steer Diavolo or Doppio away from the worst of a threat, yet they reveal only the end result without the steps leading there, leaving room for misreading. Only powers that bend fate, such as a Requiem Stand or King Crimson's own time erasure, can actually rewrite what Epitaph foresees.

Notable Users

Diavolo, the paranoid founder of the Passione crime syndicate, is the true wielder, obsessed with keeping his identity secret. His innocent alternate personality, Vinegar Doppio, controls a portion of its power, most often the forecasting of Epitaph, which makes the pair nearly impossible to ambush.
