Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam is a colony of many small bodies, each looking like a cross between a tomato and a pearl onion fitted with arms and a face. They are minuscule, since they have to be eaten to do their work, and stay unseen while woven into Tonio's dishes. When Josuke exposes them with Crazy Diamond, they seem startled and squeak in surprise. Unlike most Stands, this one was never triggered by an Arrow but grew out of Tonio's drive to perfect his cooking.

The Stand slips into Tonio's food and heals whoever eats it by amplifying the natural curative qualities of the ingredients. Tonio first reads a customer's palm to spot their ailment, then builds a fine dish and laces Pearl Jam through it. Its reach is remarkable, able to mend even illnesses normally beyond cure so long as the right ingredients go in. Once swallowed, it draws on the meal's nutrients to trigger the body into fixing itself, drawing out tears, ejecting a rotten tooth and sprouting a fresh one at unnatural speed, or expelling a diseased organ and replacing it. In one extreme case it opened Okuyasu's belly to remove his troubled intestines, after which his body settled as though nothing had occurred, only now free of the sickness.

Each specific dish answers one specific ailment, so a diner may be served food they would rather refuse, as when Okuyasu, who hates spice, got pasta made with peppers. Anyone not suffering from a condition the dish addresses feels no effect at all, which is why Josuke has no reaction to the plain water. Better ingredients heal faster and stronger; graver conditions demand rarer, costlier fare, shown when Tonio cures Virginia's cancer only after obtaining an exceptional abalone.

Pearl Jam belongs to Tonio Trussardi, who deploys it solely through the meals of his Italian restaurant. Okuyasu Nijimura is its most memorable patient, treated for a string of ailments across a single visit.
