The World

Standing tall on a heavily muscled frame, The World resembles DIO closely enough to pass as his double. A mask sheathes the upper face down to the nose, angling sharply back to a raised peak and leaving only an inverted triangle of features exposed, an outline that recalls the crown once worn by rulers of Lower Egypt. Twin diving cylinders ride on its back, feeding oxygen through ridged cables to the mask, a detail Araki explained as its air supply during frozen time. Simple clock faces mark the backs of both hands, while heart shapes crown its chin, abdomen, crotch, and knees.

Coloring shifts across media: wholly yellow in the tinted manga, grey-skinned with golden garb and green hearts in the television series, and grey with bronze hearts and ivory dress in the OVA. The name draws from the final card of the Major Arcana, an emblem of upheaval and the dawn of a fresh order. Rumor of the Stand alone frightened and bound DIO's servants long before anyone laid eyes on it. As a close-range type it reaches only about ten meters, yet its raw force and command of time rank it among the deadliest powers in the saga.

The World fights with overwhelming physical gifts, matching and by DIO's claim even besting Star Platinum in exchanges of blows. It rains down rapid punches punctuated by the occasional kick, driven by tremendous strength, keen senses, sharp precision, and startling speed. A single strike can pierce clean through a body, as Kakyoin discovers. Its recurring cry, voiced through DIO, is the mocking chant of Muda Muda Muda, meaning useless repeated over and over. The Stand can even lift its user briefly into flight.

Its defining power is the arrest of time. Only DIO, the Stand, and others who share the ability may act once the seconds halt, leaving every other person defenseless. DIO strikes, repositions, or toys with victims freely, and any momentum he lends to thrown objects survives the pause: knives hurled during the stop drift forward, freeze, then resume their flight the instant time restarts. Because gravity no longer acts, DIO can also drift through the air at will. Early in Part 3 his weakened body caps the freeze near five seconds, but as his old neck wound mends the span stretches toward nine, and had he lived it seemingly would have grown without limit. The power must be triggered consciously, so a sudden ambush can stop him from stopping time.

DIO wields The World across Stardust Crusaders, having seized the body of Jonathan Joestar. The Stand is the first design Araki drew for the series, conceived deliberately as a foil to Jotaro's Star Platinum. In his notebook DIO records an intent to inscribe fourteen phrases on the Stand, though whether he manages it before dying stays unknown. Evolved and alternate versions surface later: The World Over Heaven appears in Eyes of Heaven under Heaven Ascension DIO, while The World Ultimate rises in the JORGE JOESTAR novel through Ultimate Dio and Kars. An alternate-universe Diego Brando also carries his own THE WORLD in Steel Ball Run.
