Daniel J. D'Arby

Of roughly average to slightly above-average height with a slim-to-medium frame, D'Arby wears his dark hair at moderate volume, swept back and away from his face, and keeps a neat mustache. Faint lines trail from beneath his eyes toward the corners of his mouth. His usual dress is a pale shirt, a dark tie, and a mid-toned vest printed with spirals.

Affable on the surface but slyly knowing, D'Arby lives for the thrill of gambling even while calling it worthless, and he takes open pride in cheating, reasoning that any swindle nobody catches simply counts as fair play. He stretches that logic into a grim social outlook, holding that anyone gullible enough to be fooled deserves it and has no right to protest. His self-regard is enormous, and he calls himself the finest gambler alive; the moment Polnareff's soul is his, he drops the friendly mask and challenges the group outright, declaring he now fights for his own pride rather than for DIO. He also guards his family name jealously, bristling when Joseph deliberately mangles it. That confidence only collapses when Jotaro's pressure during their poker game robs him of all certainty and he cracks apart.

D'Arby made a predatory living luring people into innocent-looking games so that Osiris could extract their souls the instant they sensed defeat, sealing each one inside casino tokens; he would then bait the loser's friends and family into trying to win it back, swelling his hoard, which he kept catalogued in deep sleep rather than conscious captivity. The Joestars meet him in a Cairo cafe while searching for DIO's mansion, and after an impatient Polnareff bets his soul on which slice of meat a cat will take first and loses, D'Arby reveals himself as one of DIO's men. Joseph tries to out-cheat him at a coin-and-liquor game and is beaten by a hidden smear of chocolate. Jotaro then takes him on at poker; after Star Platinum snaps his cheating finger, D'Arby unravels, divides the captured souls into chips, and finally loses his nerve when Jotaro coolly raises without even looking at his cards and demands information on DIO's Stand as his stake. Unable to call, he breaks down into a hysterical wreck and admits defeat in his heart, freeing Polnareff, Joseph, and every soul he had ever gathered. His younger brother, Telence, shares the same soul-collecting obsession.
