Appearance

Enya is a small, elderly woman with a great puff of white hair tied into two pigtails. Her wrinkled face is dominated by oversized eyes and a toothless mouth, and she drapes herself in loose, baggy robes. Like her son, she bears two right hands, and she leans on a wooden club taller than herself as a cane.

When she poses as an innkeeper, she wraps bandages around the hand on her left side to keep anyone from noticing it is a second right hand. In her guise as a beautiful young woman, she wears a bindi and a revealing outfit paired with a shawl she uses to hide that same hand.

Personality

Enya is a malicious old woman utterly given over to DIO's cause. Her opening move is to send seven Stand users to kill the Joestar Group, and when she uses Justice she savors humiliating her victims, forcing Hol Horse to swallow his own hand and shoot himself, and trying to make Polnareff lick a toilet clean. She holds a coldly materialistic view of life, insisting people exist only to seize money, sex, or power, and thinks nothing of striking a stray cat with her cane.

Above all she worships DIO, certain that his Stand The World makes him invincible, and she refuses to believe he could ever order her death. As a mother she loves J. Geil to a warped degree, imagining him a noble man and dismissing his crimes, and a blood bond means she suffers the same wounds he does. It is through that link that she feels her son die, weeping briefly before rage takes hold and she swears to destroy the group herself.

History

Before the journey, Enya played a key part in spreading Stands. By 1986 she had purchased five Stand-creating Arrows from a nineteen-year-old Diavolo and used one on DIO to give him The World; two of the remaining Arrows would later pass to Keicho Nijimura and Yoshihiro Kira. Introduced as DIO's confidante, she boasts that the seven Stand users she has dispatched to Asia, her son among them, will end the Joestar Group. Instead all seven fail and J. Geil is killed, and Enya, consumed with grief and fury, uses Justice to reshape a desert graveyard into a bustling town in Multan, Pakistan, its people reduced to puppets.

She welcomes the travelers to her hotel but nearly exposes herself by addressing Joseph Joestar by his surname, drawing Jotaro's suspicion. When Hol Horse arrives, she stabs his arm, convinced he betrayed her son, and forces him to shoot himself with Emperor. Feigning collapse, she is undone when Hol Horse warns Polnareff, and she chases him with scissors and a mob of corpse puppets, at one point pinning him in a restroom. Her cover finally breaks when she calls Jotaro by name, a slip made flimsy since he had signed the ledger as "Qtaro." She buries him under her puppets, but Star Platinum inhales her amorphous Stand and she faints from asphyxiation.

Taken along with the group, Enya is assassinated by Steely Dan, who plants one of DIO's flesh buds in her brain using Lovers. Despite Polnareff's efforts to save her, she dies without giving up the secret of DIO's Stand, loyal to the end even after he condemned her. In the OVA adaptation her role differs: she disguises herself as a young woman with Justice, is exposed by Jotaro's cigarette trick, and is killed when the flesh bud activates on its own, with Steely Dan absent entirely.
