Erina Pendleton

In her younger years Erina carries herself as a fair-skinned English girl, her blonde hair gathered into a ponytail above pale blue eyes. Her whole look is that of a well-raised Victorian daughter.

By the time of Battle Tendency, age has caught up with her only slightly. Though she has reached her seventies, her face stays remarkably smooth, and she now keeps a pair of spectacles perched over her eyes.

A product of proper Victorian upbringing, Erina is warm, courteous, and every inch the refined lady. Beneath that gentleness, however, runs a firm spine. After Dio Brando forced a kiss on her, she rinsed her mouth using filthy puddle water without a moment's hesitation, choosing shame over surrender, and she could level an icy, unmistakable stare when she wished, as Robert E. O. Speedwagon discovered on first meeting her.

Her love for Jonathan Joestar defined her life. Reunited with him after years apart, she nursed his wounds around the clock until exhaustion overtook her, and when he lay dying she was ready to follow him into death, relenting only to rescue an orphaned infant.

Old age never dulled that inner fire. She was among the few who could rein in her grandson Joseph while keeping her dignity and wisdom intact, sterner than before yet still deeply kind. Most telling of all, having grown up amid the prejudices of Victorian England, she welcomed Smokey Brown as a friend without a second thought, a woman ahead of both intolerant eras she lived through.

Phantom Blood. As a child, Erina is rescued by Jonathan Joestar when local bullies snatch her doll. Moved by his dream of becoming a gentleman, she grows close to him and becomes the one comfort he has once Dio turns the household against him. Dio, learning of the romance, forces himself on her to spoil it; her defiant response earns her a blow, and the humiliation drives her to leave for India with her father, out of Jonathan's life for years.

Seven years on she returns to England and takes up work at the hospital where her father is posted. There she tends Jonathan after the Joestar mansion burns, staying at his side as Will Anthonio Zeppeli heals him with the Ripple. Learning that Dio survived, Jonathan keeps his distance for her safety, then returns once the danger at Windknight's Lot passes, and the two marry soon after. Their honeymoon voyage to America is cut short when Dio reappears and mortally wounds Jonathan. With his last strength he sinks the ship and pushes Erina into Dio's coffin alongside a rescued baby; the sealed casket shields her from the blast and drifts her to safety near the Canary Islands.

Later years. Erina gives birth to George Joestar II and entrusts the saved infant, the future Lisa Lisa, to Straizo. After George is killed and his wife forced into hiding, Erina and Speedwagon agree to shield the young Joseph from the family's violent legacy, raising him with a strict hand. In Battle Tendency she travels to New York with Joseph, warmly befriends Smokey Brown, and watches with dread as the horrors of fifty years past seem to return. Though Joseph is believed dead after his clash with Kars, she is overjoyed to find him alive and newly married. In her final years she taught English at a school, dying peacefully in 1950 when she was eighty-one, surrounded by those she loved.
