Across the long JoJo's Bizarre Adventure saga, ghosts are the conscious dead: souls unable to cross into the afterlife that instead linger on Earth. They grow especially prominent in Diamond is Unbreakable, where restless spirits shape the plot and sometimes lend the heroes an unexpected hand.

Appearance

A spirit tends to look identical to the person it once was, since a soul simply mirrors the individual, with Yoshikage Kira standing out as a rare deviation owing to his unusual circumstances. The fatal wounds a ghost suffered do resurface on its form, yet only after it consciously recalls the manner of its death.

Unlike the living, these beings never mature or change physically, and they hold solely the memories gathered while alive, which is why probing one reveals nothing beyond its earthly past. Ordinary humans cannot see ghosts while animals can, and a spirit is still able to make its voice reach the living. Because Stand users carry a heightened supernatural presence of their own, they notice ghosts on sight and can even reach hidden spectral places such as Morioh's alley on the edge of the beyond.

Abilities

Spirits obey a set of strict, unexplained conditions. One holds that a ghost may cross a threshold only when a space sits empty or when an occupant within extends an invitation, and that consent can be as trivial as agreeing to open a slot in a door. They pass through matter freely by default, since their intangibility can be toggled on and off, and while they can shift objects around they never actually feel them.

Contact carries a steep price: brushing against a living person against their will strips a spirit of its limbs, so most shrink away into corners and shadows to dodge collisions. A ghost that possessed a Stand during life may keep wielding it, but only so long as it avoids sliding into a memoryless, wandering state, since that transition shatters the Stand outright.

History

Objects too can turn spectral once destroyed, behaving as though built from ghost material that other spirits may grasp and use, spanning everything from flames and food to firearms and whole buildings. Such items cannot injure a living person, yet they can be turned against fellow spirits, including the small purging creatures called cleansers. Cleansers hatch from eggs a spirit has touched and exist to thin out the dead so the world is not overrun, and feeding on a ghost triggers plant growth that devours it from within.

Certain haunted sites fold themselves into impossibly narrow gaps, like the sliver between two adjacent structures. The best known is Morioh's alley on the boundary between the living world and what lies past it, a corridor where malevolent spirits gather and where a passing soul must never glance back, or countless disembodied hands will haul it away and erase every memory. In Stone Ocean, Emporio Alnino wields a Stand tied to a ghostly room and its contents, following much the same laws seen in the Dead Man's Questions one-shot.
