Appearance

Smaller and slighter than the JoJos before him, Giorno is a lean but toned teenager of ordinary height. Golden hair of middling length falls into a short braid at the back, and three large curls sit in a row across his brow; the color was once dark and unkempt before awakening his Stand reshaped it. His eyes taper sharply at the corners, an echo of his father.

His costume is a two-piece suit trimmed with ornate touches, from wing-like shapes on the collar to a heart-shaped opening across the chest. Its signature marks are the trio of ladybug emblems set around his torso and, later, on his shoes, mirroring Gold Experience itself. Artists have colored the ensemble many ways, though blue edged in gold and pink edged in green recur most often.

Personality

A miserable childhood of bullying and a stepfather's abuse left Giorno withdrawn and certain he was worthless, until an injured gangster he once shielded quietly repaid the kindness and taught him that people could be trusted. From that turning point he grew into someone assured and considerate, and he came to define himself through what he calls resolve: the will to choose a path and see it through to the end, whatever pain it demands.

That resolve makes him willing to take an injury when it opens an advantage, though he plots such gambits carefully to survive them, and he draws a firm line against pure self-sacrifice. He guards life fiercely and rarely leaves anyone to die if he can prevent it. Beneath a practiced mask of calm confidence lies a keen observer and deductive mind, quiet by habit yet blunt in his opinions, courteous toward superiors but cutting and talkative once an enemy lies at his mercy. His overarching dream is to become a Gang-Star and choke off the drug trade poisoning Italy.

History

Born in 1985 to a Japanese woman and DIO, who used Jonathan Joestar's stolen body, the boy called Haruno Shiobana moved to Italy at four and took the name Giorno Giovanna. Neglect and beatings gave him a bleak start, but a gangster he saved and then concealed with a burst of Gold Experience's power watched over him from the shadows, and the shift in his fortunes fixed his ambition to remake the mafia. At fifteen he is a petty thief in Naples when a clash with the gangster Bruno Bucciarati ends in mutual respect, and Bruno agrees to slip him into Passione.

Giorno passes the lethal initiation set by the capo Polpo and joins Bruno's crew, then helps recover Polpo's hidden fortune. The team is soon assigned to guard Trish Una, the boss's daughter, against a squad of traitorous assassins, and Giorno's ingenuity turns each ambush around, from infecting himself to spread a killer virus to Illuso, to trapping Melone's autonomous Stand inside a rigged motorcycle. His Gold Experience creates and accelerates life, spinning plants and small animals out of ordinary matter for disguise, tracking, and healing, while its short-range fists deliver savage barrages.

When the boss orders Trish killed, Bruno rebels and the crew turns against Passione, hunting the leader's identity to Sardegna and then to Rome. One by one Giorno's comrades fall, until Bruno's dying stand against Diavolo delivers the Stand Arrow into Giorno's hands. Piercing Gold Experience with it, he awakens Gold Experience Requiem, whose power to reset any action to nothing nullifies even King Crimson's erasure of time and condemns Diavolo to an endless loop of death. With the boss undone, Giorno claims leadership of Passione, having finally seized the path he swore to walk.
