Iggy

Iggy is a compact black-and-white dog whose earliest design borrows from the Boston Terrier, with white spread across his paws, belly, chest, throat, muzzle and brow. His eyes bulge a little and his jowls hang loose. Once his brutal clash with Pet Shop is over, his proportions change: he becomes noticeably smaller and his face turns more cartoonish and expressive, sporting a broad forehead, a tiny mouth, oversized ears, and far larger eyes.

By reputation Iggy is a nasty, ill-mannered animal with a chip on his shoulder. He delights in gnawing on people's hair and breaking wind in their faces, tormenting Polnareff in particular, and he thinks nothing of pulling petty pranks in revenge. Independent to a fault, he drifts away from the group whenever it suits him, raising chaos and swiping food, and more than once his scavenging accidentally rescues everyone. At first he wants no part of the campaign against DIO, guarding only his own hide and even trying to feed Jotaro to N'Doul to survive; only after the ordeal with Pet Shop does he grow a genuine grudge against the vampire. He rates himself and The Fool as the equal of Jotaro and Star Platinum, yet he is not without principle, wading into a fight with Pet Shop to shield a dog-loving child and finally laying down his life for Polnareff. His treat of choice is coffee-flavored gum.

A pedigreed pup sold to a wealthy owner, Iggy came to see humans as fools and struck out on his own, ruling the stray dogs of New York's slums until Muhammad Avdol, the only person able to approach him, folded him into the Joestar Group. His Stand, the sand-based Fool, lets him hurl or sculpt huge masses of sand, and his canine nose can pick out enemies and even Stands from a distance. Flown into the desert to help fight DIO, he promptly savaged Polnareff and made everyone doubt his worth, then bolted when N'Doul struck. Jotaro seized him and forced him to lead the way, only for Iggy to try abandoning him; Jotaro instead threw the dog at N'Doul, setting up the enemy's defeat, and afterward forgave and accepted him.

Through the trek up the Nile, Iggy mostly bumbled his way into helping, foiling schemes by Oingo, Anubis and Boingo without ever grasping what he had done. His turning point came at DIO's Mansion, where he crossed paths with the hawk guardian Pet Shop. Refusing to let it slaughter a dog-loving boy, he fought a savage duel against its ice Stand Horus, lost a paw, and at last clamped down on the bird's beak as it formed an icicle, blowing its head apart. That battle gave him his own reason to see DIO dead, and he led the heroes to the mansion.

Inside, Iggy and Avdol cut through Kenny G.'s illusory maze, but Vanilla Ice ambushed and killed Avdol. Bent on defending Polnareff, Iggy struck at Vanilla Ice and tried to fool him by conjuring a decoy DIO out of sand, a ruse that failed and enraged the assassin into kicking him nearly to death. Spending the last of his strength, Iggy used The Fool to shield Polnareff, overexerting himself and dying, to the shock of a man who assumed the dog had run off. His spirit rose skyward beside Avdol's. The OVA gives him a different end, his lower body erased by Vanilla Ice's Stand, Cream.
