Jean Pierre Polnareff

Tall and powerfully built, Polnareff is impossible to mistake for anyone else thanks to the towering flat top of silver hair he wears above a receding hairline and a face without eyebrows. Earrings shaped like jaggedly halved hearts hang at his ears. Images of his boyhood show prominent front teeth and oversized ears. Through Stardust Crusaders he favors a strapped black tube top and loose trousers hung with pouches, and his brutal duel with Vanilla Ice maims that same side, stripping away two fingers and every toe there.

By the time of Vento Aureo the injuries have mounted far worse. Missing his right eye and both legs above the knee, he gets around in a wheelchair, covers the empty socket with a stylized eyepatch, and fits a prosthetic right forearm. In the final battle his spirit is carried on inside the turtle Coco Jumbo.

At his core Polnareff is a loud, self-assured Frenchman whose guiding principle is honor. He would sooner lose a fight than win it dishonorably, once handicapping himself by explaining his own technique before a duel even began. That same chivalry leaves him poorly matched against the sly, underhanded enemies he keeps running into, since he rarely anticipates a dirty trick. He is impulsive and quick to argue, easily dazzled by a pretty face, and vain about his hair.

Yet he is also the warmest member of the traveling group. He jokes constantly, feels grief openly, and mourns fallen comrades more deeply than anyone else. Revenge drives much of his story, first for his murdered sister and later against the foes who take his friends. Curiously, the two people he ends up loving most, Avdol and Iggy, are both allies he could not stand at first. By his return in Vento Aureo he has grown far more measured and grave, offering hard-won counsel to Giorno and the young rebels.

Polnareff enters the world in 1964 in rural France, a natural Stand user who spends a lonely boyhood after his mother dies young. The murder of his sister Sherry by the two-right-handed J. Geil hardens him into a man obsessed with vengeance, and he pours years into mastering Silver Chariot. His powers eventually draw the attention of DIO, who ensnares and brainwashes him.

Under that control Polnareff ambushes Jotaro's group in Hong Kong, but once Avdol beats him and Jotaro removes the flesh bud lodged in his skull, he throws in with the Joestars for the long trek toward DIO. Along the way he finally corners J. Geil and settles the score for Sherry, though the victory costs Avdol's apparent life and later his agonizing fight with Vanilla Ice. He survives the war against DIO and drifts into work as an independent investigator.

Years afterward, still hunting the Passione boss he had tracked for over a decade, he crosses paths with Team Bucciarati in Vento Aureo. Diavolo defeats and cripples him, but the touch of the Arrow awakens Chariot Requiem within him, and to cheat death his soul is preserved inside the body of the turtle Coco Jumbo.
