Appearance

Kyoka is a small woman whose hair is swept back and coiled into puffy curls on each side. She wears a loose, nearly turtlenecked long-sleeved top beneath a dark skirt that hangs from her shoulders to mid-thigh, with a diamond-shaped brooch set at a cut-out on the chest and a thick, light-edged black belt at her waist.

For the hike to the village she adds a belted jacket over her torso and a small backpack.

Personality

Beneath an easygoing surface, Kyoka carries a faint arrogance, brushing aside one of Rohan's story ideas while feigning interest to steer him toward her own. Araki describes her as ambitious and raised in an upper-class household, which fits her eagerness at the prospect of the village's sudden riches.

Even so, she means well, dragging Rohan out to witness something interesting and pausing to help a fallen hatchling back toward its nest.

History

In Millionaire Village, Kyoka is discussing Rohan's planned one-shot about a solar eclipse when she brings up a mountain settlement of eleven grand mansions, each owned by someone who inexplicably became rich at twenty-five after moving in. She invites him to join her when she buys a house there, warning on the way that the residents will not tolerate bad manners.

The pair rescue a chick fallen from a tree, then a butler named Ikkyu leads them inside and leaves them with tea. Rohan senses a hidden test, but Kyoka drinks anyway, and Ikkyu announces she has broken three rules of etiquette and refuses the sale. She pleads for another chance; then a phone call brings word that her mother and fiance have died in a crash, and the chick lies dead.

Rohan uses Heaven's Door on Ikkyu and learns the village runs on a curse that rewards the well-mannered and strips things from the rude. As Kyoka suffers a heart attack, Rohan passes the manners test, tricks Ikkyu into breaking a rule of his own, and reclaims what she lost before carrying her out, where the chick has revived. The OVA closes by revealing her mother and fiance were merely rear-ended and unharmed. In a later tale, Hot Summer Martha, she worries over possible copyright trouble with Rohan's story of that name and congratulates him when it becomes a hit.
