Lucy Steel

Through most of Steel Ball Run, Lucy is a fourteen-year-old of unremarkable height, her light hair worn at medium length above a dress paired with striped tights, arm warmers, and tall boots ringed with circular trim. After Funny Valentine seizes her, the outfit is pared back to a plain dress and pumps while her hair grows out a little, and near the story's end she takes to a hood, her boots and arm warmers back but her legs bare.

She reappears far older in JoJolion. A 1911 flashback shows her as a grown woman in a dark suit and sunglasses, briefcase in hand, and by 1941 she is elderly, wearing a pearl necklace, a hat, and star-patterned leggings that echo Johnny Joestar's own hat.

Bright, tender, and quietly brave, Lucy weathers constant danger with steady nerve. Even as a girl her warmth led her to approach a broke, drunken Steven Steel and become the first to back his dream of a cross-country race, urging him to make it vast and its prize enormous. When he later saved her from the mafia, she bonded with him deeply, a devoted yet strictly platonic partnership that outsiders misread.

Reserved next to Steven's showman persona, she alone sees his private doubts and steadies him through them. Her loyalty drives her to fling herself, frail and Stand-less, into hazard after hazard: she slips into guarded compounds to undercut Valentine, survives lethal run-ins with the likes of Blackmore, Mike O., and Diego Brando, and flatly rebuffs Mountain Tim by declaring her pride in being Steven's wife. Jittery by nature, she is nonetheless sharp and inventive, reading lips and acting well enough to reach places others cannot, and she hides a ruthless edge, shooting Blackmore, stabbing Valentine, and ultimately killing a Diego from another world.

Lucy is born around 1876, the second-eldest of six children raised by an Oklahoma farmer. Her mother's death when Lucy is twelve tips the family into hardship, and years later her indebted father hands her over to the mafia to settle what he owes. Steven Steel, whom she had once inspired to dream up his race, tracks her down and repays the favor by claiming to have already married her, sparing her a life of prostitution. The fourteen-year-old offers to become his wife in earnest, but Steven gently refuses, and the two settle into a fierce, purely platonic trust.

During the race she travels with Steven as his support, and while shadowing President Valentine she overhears the truth about the Saint's Corpse. Fearing the government will kill her husband, she steals coordinates to a Corpse Part and flees, aided by Mountain Tim and hunted by Blackmore. The Corpse's power stirs as she digs up the Spine, letting her gun Blackmore down and reach Gyro and Johnny, who convince her to keep robbing Valentine of the relics. Disguised as the late Scarlet Valentine, she is exposed and assaulted by the President, and in fleeing she stumbles onto the gathered Corpse Parts, which impregnate her with the head and trigger a metamorphosis into a temporary Stand that Valentine exploits for his own protection.

Once Valentine falls and the Corpse leaves her body, she reunites with Steven, then works out that a Diego Brando from a parallel world has stolen the relic and destroys him using the severed head of this world's Diego. In the years after, Lucy joins the Speedwagon Foundation, probing Morioh in 1911 and returning in 1941 as an old woman to study the Higashikata orchard and the Locacaca. There she is rescued from a rock-insect assailant by a young man who reveals himself as Joseph, and he follows her back to America as her assistant. She dies of lung disease in 1944.
