Mary carries a regal air, her dark hair pinned into a Victorian updo. A showy choker set with big jewels rings her neck, the largest stone resting just above her collarbone. She is seen so briefly that little else is certain, though she surely dressed as a woman of means would in her era.

The narrative reveals almost nothing of Mary's character, since she is gone before the events of the story begin. What her single defining moment conveys is a mother's devotion, since she gave her own life to keep her baby safe.

Mary lost her life in the carriage crash from which Dario Brando pretended to rescue her husband George. Afterward her likeness survives only in a photograph kept in Jonathan's bedroom, which the grieving boy gazes at the night his dog Danny dies. Years on, while Jonathan pores over the workings of the Stone Mask, he notes that the relic came from a journey his mother had once taken.

Her memory surfaces again in the poisoning affair. An inspector tells Speedwagon that Dario had pried the wedding ring from her body and tried to pawn it. George, aware of the theft, chose to return the ring to the jailed Dario and told him to sell it, hoping the man might mend his ways.
