Narciso Anasui

Tall and built somewhere between lean and athletic, Anasui rarely goes without the flat, narrow cap perched on his head. His torso and lower legs are covered by a tight mesh of diagonal lines, loosely woven like a fishnet with wide gaps, and most of his chest stays bare. A striking detail runs across that outfit: footprint shapes climb from his waist wrap up onto his chest, a nod to how Diver Down can push its limbs out from inside another body. His hair is usually drawn pink, which gives him a marked likeness to Diavolo. In his earliest panels he had shorter hair and was even presented as a woman, and only later was he redrawn with a more masculine look. Araki has said he reworked the design to reach past the usual definitions of beauty, though the anime uses the revised look from the outset.

Anasui is first painted as the sort of man who never lends anyone a hand, and Emporio warns Foo Fighters that without Weather Report around to steady him, there is no telling what he might do. Since boyhood he has been driven by a compulsion to take things apart, once dismantling a telephone pole and, in one infamous act, tearing his cheating girlfriend and her lover to pieces. He later owns up to being a murderer and carries guilt for it, treating his devotion to Jolyne as a path toward atonement. What draws him to her is her fierce resolve to rescue her father, and he swears both to protect her and to marry her, courting her at every quiet moment with little success. He is willing to lay down his life for her without hesitation. Beyond Jolyne, only a handful of people move his heart, chief among them Weather Report, whose friendship predated the quest and whose death he vows to avenge alongside that of Foo Fighters.

As a boy Anasui was awkward and obsessed with disassembly, methodically pulling apart watches, toys, and anything that caught his eye. At ten he took his neighbor's car to pieces and was institutionalized for half a year, and on another occasion he undid a high-voltage pole. At twenty-one he came home to find his lover with another man and carefully tore the pair apart so they could never be whole again, which handed him a twelve-year prison term for murder in the first degree. Behind bars he met Weather Report and Emporio and awakened to his Stand, Diver Down, a close-range power that stores an impact within any surface to release later, phases through solid matter, and rewrites the materials it passes through.

Hearing of Jolyne through Foo Fighters, Anasui leaves Emporio's ghost room and appoints himself her bodyguard, driven by sudden and total love, on the condition that Foo Fighters ensure Jolyne one day weds him. He shields her through the fight with Kenzou, the birth of the Green Baby, and the escapes from Yo-Yo Ma and D an G, again and again risking himself. During the Whitesnake pursuit a fake Weather Report, conjured by the enemy, punches through his chest, and the dying Pucci lodges Jotaro's memory disc in him to bury it; Foo Fighters spends the last of herself keeping him alive and ejecting the disc. Revived, he trails Weather Report out of the prison and endures the nightmares of Bohemian Rhapsody and the snail-cursed streets of Heavy Weather. Through C-Moon and into Made in Heaven he stays at Jolyne's side, at last winning her blessing to propose, before he offers to take a fatal blow so Jotaro can freeze time and finish Pucci. On March 22, 2012, Stone Free, hijacked by Made in Heaven, spears him through the chest instead, and he sinks into the marsh water and dies. When Pucci's death rewinds the cosmos, Anasui returns in a fresh timeline as Anakiss, the untroubled boyfriend of the reborn Jolyne known as Irene.
