Appearance

A grid of shaved lines and cropped squares gives Wekapipo one of the strangest heads of hair in the whole story. He first turns up sporting a mustache, which he later gets rid of. His wardrobe favors pale jackets and trousers stamped with interlocking pairs of red and teal dots, a Venn-diagram sort of motif that carries over even onto his sportswear.

Personality

Grim and single-minded, Wekapipo fixes on his objective and has almost no patience for the clowning of his partner Magent Magent, whom he repeatedly orders to quit chattering or gloating mid-fight. In battle he is calculating, sizing up an opponent's strong and weak points and shutting down each advantage in turn. His years as a guard also left him able to perceive Stands, which lets him react to Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

His bleak outlook traces back to his youth, when he was fiercely protective of his younger sister and went so far as to break up her marriage after learning she was being beaten. The false report of her death sank him into a lasting gloom. Craving nothing more than a comfortable life, he is willing to abandon Valentine and back whoever seems likely to win. Yet he keeps a code of honor: he respects the Zeppeli family's Spin, agrees to aid Gyro and Johnny once he hears his sister is alive, and on being beaten tries to take his own life rather than bear the shame of returning defeated to Valentine.

History

Born in the Kingdom of Naples around 1859, Wekapipo gained a sister seven years later and, following family custom, took up the Spin and the steel balls as a boy, honing them into adulthood before enlisting in the Royal Guard. As part of the imperial guard's arsenal he wields a specialized steel ball, the Wrecking Ball, which sheds smaller satellites that strike on their own and whose shockwaves rob a victim of all feeling on their left side.

At twenty-four he helped marry his sister to the son of a wealthy noble, a colleague from the Guard, who soon began abusing her. It took Wekapipo six months to grasp the truth, and by the time he visited, a beating had left her permanently blind in one eye. He had the marriage annulled through the Pope himself, prompting his former brother-in-law to confront and pummel him while insulting his sister. Rather than fight back and endanger his family, he endured it, then accepted a formal steel-ball duel. At the meeting ground a crowd of hooded men waited as seconds; Wekapipo won and killed the man, only to learn he had already been sentenced to death, which the strangers were there to carry out. Their leader, Gregorio Zeppeli, respecting his fair victory, instead offered to wipe his identity from all records, staging his death in exchange for exile and leaving his sister behind. Bitter but resigned, he accepted.

Arriving in the United States, he sought out President Funny Valentine and asked for citizenship. Valentine promised him a high government post, on the condition that he assassinate Gyro and Johnny and seize their Saint's Corpse parts. Paired with Magent Magent, Wekapipo ambushed the pair, lost, and defected once Gyro revealed his sister still lived. Magent later attacked him on Valentine's orders and wrapped himself in dynamite; the blast flung Wekapipo into a river to await rescue by Diego Brando. Fighting the President alongside Diego, he found a strange peace in opposing America. He met his end when Diego tricked him into touching his own counterpart from another dimension via D4C, causing both versions to merge and shatter into thousands of cubes, an outcome that spared Diego from the same fate.
