Arriving in Venice, Joseph Joestar grumbles that Wamuu saw through his one-month training bluff. To sharpen his control of the Ripple, Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli brings him to meet their instructor, Lisa Lisa, who immediately fits Joseph with a breathing-restricting mask he must wear throughout his lessons. Elsewhere, Robert E. O. Speedwagon frets over how to tell Erina about the deadly rings the Pillar Men planted inside Joseph. Lisa Lisa's first challenge sends the two young men up the Hell Climb Pillar, a twenty-four-meter shaft slick with oil that can only be scaled through the Ripple, on pain of starvation.

Joseph nearly cheats by rigging a guideline until Lisa Lisa catches him, after which he studies Caesar and learns to channel Ripple energy into his fingertips. A crack that looks like a resting spot proves to be a trap, blasting oil under pressure from the pillar's twenty-meter mark. Caesar forces his way through the barrier by gripping and repelling at once, reaching the summit, while Joseph finds the barrier's weakest point and leaps clear of it. Out of breath on the final stretch, Joseph is hauled up by Caesar, and a satisfied Lisa Lisa summons her attendants Loggins and Messina to drill the pair further in the weeks ahead.

Lisa Lisa debuts as Joseph and Caesar's Ripple teacher, alongside her subordinates Loggins and Messina. The Hell Climb Pillar trial teaches Joseph to focus the Ripple through his fingertips, and the looming threat of the poison rings raises the stakes of his training. The episode ends with both trainees cleared to begin their next phase of instruction.

This is the sixteenth episode overall and the seventh of Battle Tendency. The adaptation cuts the doctor and Speedwagon from the opening Ripple demonstration, along with the doctor's explanation that the rings are fused to Joseph's arteries and cannot be removed with current medicine. Also dropped is Joseph's observation that he feels no hunger or bodily needs while on the Hell Climb Pillar and his wondering whether the Ripple is responsible.
