Summary

Joseph reaches Rome and waits at a restaurant for the contact Stroheim named. Annoyed by a gambler at another table, he learns the man is Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli, grandson of Will Zeppeli and the very person he was meant to meet. Meanwhile Speedwagon is shown alive, and Santana's petrified remains have been moved to Foundation headquarters, where researchers find the stone body still living but subduable with ultraviolet lamps, along with the masks of the other Pillar Men, Santana's ranking lowest among them.

Speedwagon introduces the two at the Fontana del Tritone. They clash immediately, since Caesar resents Joseph's grandfather for allowing Will Zeppeli's death and dismisses Joseph's win over Santana as luck. Enraged, Joseph attacks but is stopped by a woman Caesar had kissed and controls through the Ripple, who flings him into the fountain. Caesar follows with his secret Bubble Launcher, a flood of Ripple-charged bubbles that batters Joseph and traps him inside a giant sphere as he blacks out. The duel ends only when Caesar tries to kiss the woman again and a Ripple-infused pigeon bursts from her mouth into his. The group then retires to a hotel, where a card game precedes the arrival of a Nazi car driven by a young man called Mark, sent to bring them to the Pillar Men. On the way, Caesar explains the Nazis' interest in using the Ripple to defeat the ancient beings.

Beneath the Colosseum, the Nazis probe a hole forming in one of the Pillar Man statues, planning to seal it away forever. A spike suddenly impales a soldier, and the awakening figure kills more troops, using their blood and gore to smother the ultraviolet lamps. It is Wamuu, who fuses the soldiers' and officer's hands together and drains their life forces to empty husks before rousing his masters, Esidisi and Kars. The heroes arrive to find the Pillar Men already awake and the Nazis dead. Mark tries to flee but is half-absorbed by Wamuu. Kars lays out his goal of finding the Red Stone of Aja, once held by a Roman emperor, to unleash the Stone Mask's full power. Forced to end Mark's suffering with the Ripple, Caesar challenges the Pillar Men alone.

Notes

The fourteenth episode of the anime and fifth of Battle Tendency, it covers chapter 61 through part of chapter 66. The anime cuts the Foundation members reading the Pillar Men's awakening date and reorders the Chance card game before the awakening, while trimming a smoking exchange between Joseph and Caesar. Tsuda's commentary highlighted Caesar's strong debut and the squid ink spaghetti scene. Trivia notes that Caesar redirecting Joseph's spaghetti echoes a Fist of the North Star moment.
