Youth with Dio

Jonathan reveals he has already cured his father of the poison and reluctantly prepares to hand Dio to the police. Dio pleads for more time, blaming his crimes on being born poor and claiming he returned to surrender rather than flee. Speedwagon emerges to warn Jonathan not to be fooled, arguing from a lifetime in the slums that Dio was wicked from birth, then produces Wang Chan, the man who sold Dio the oriental poison. George and several officers stand revealed behind the curtain, and the heartbroken father retreats to his room rather than watch his adopted son taken away.

As Jonathan moves to cuff him, Dio suddenly brandishes the Stone Mask and renounces his humanity, stabbing at Jonathan with a knife. George throws himself in the way and is fatally wounded. Dio smears George's blood on the mask, dons it, and transforms as its spikes pierce his skull. Gunfire drives him out the window, seemingly dead. In his son's arms, George gives Jonathan his late mother's ring and, through a flashback about the imprisoned Dario Brando, absolves Dio and asks that he be buried beside his father before dying.

Dio's body is gone from the ground, and he decapitates the head policeman before slaughtering the rest, drinking blood while clinging to the ceiling as a Vampire. Jonathan fights back with a spear, which Dio bends and turns against him. When Dio loses his prey, Jonathan sets the curtains ablaze and the mansion erupts in flames. The two grapple down through the burning house until Jonathan changes their fall to drop Dio onto the pointed Statue of the Goddess of Love, pinning him to burn with the manor. Speedwagon pulls the wounded Jonathan free. The next day, Wang Chan digs through the ruins, retrieves the Stone Mask, and is drained by Dio, who has survived the fire.

Dio abandons his plea for mercy and uses the Stone Mask to become a Vampire, transforming with George Joestar's blood. George dies protecting Jonathan, passing on his mother's ring and forgiving Dio in his final words. The vampiric Dio massacres the police before battling Jonathan through the burning Joestar Mansion. Jonathan impales Dio on the Statue of the Goddess of Love and escapes with Speedwagon's help, though a closing scene confirms Dio endured the flames by draining Wang Chan.

The third episode overall, and the third of Phantom Blood, adapts Chapters 11 through 16. The adaptation trims the inspector's dialogue about arresting Dario in Scotland twenty years earlier and softens how Dio breaks Jonathan's ribs during the fall, showing a knee to the stomach instead. It also drops Dio's worry that his immortality might fail while his burns were unhealed. In his commentary, Naokatsu Tsuda described repeatedly reworking the storyboard and cutting scenes, and noted the ending credits were inserted between the final scenes for a lengthening effect absent from the TV broadcast.
