Gameplay

The player leads a customizable Jump reader across a large overworld, gradually tracking down and recruiting sixteen heroes pulled from different Weekly Shonen Jump series. Each recruited hero fights alongside the lead character with attacks based on their manga abilities, and the party grows as more heroes join, letting the player mix and match fighters against the roaming villain forces blocking their path.

Premise

The story casts an ordinary Jump reader as the hero who must save the magazine's universe from a coalition of villains led by Dragon Ball's Piccolo Daimao. Joseph Joestar represents JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and joins the party after being found at a set of historic ruins, fighting with his Ripple Punch and Clacker Volley attacks. Because the manga had only reached the Esidisi fight at the time, only Esidisi and Santana appear as JoJo related enemies, with Kars and Wamuu left out entirely.

Release

Tose develops the game for Bandai, who releases it in Japan on February 15, 1989, and it never reaches outside Japan. It becomes a commercial hit, selling roughly 1.1 million cartridges and marking the first appearance of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in a video game. Famitsu scores it 21 out of 40, and its success leads directly to a 1991 sequel, Famicom Jump II: Saikyo no Shichinin.
