Gameplay

Combat plays out as a series of 3D brawler stages set in enclosed, free roaming arenas where multiple enemies can pile onto the player at once. The playable cast changes chapter by chapter as the story advances, and most major figures from the arc, including several minor and unnamed fighters, get their own moveset. A Heat Gauge builds as the player lands hits and drains when they take damage; filling it lets a character unleash a powerful Overdrive attack. Every fight ends with a letter grade from S down to E based on speed, health remaining, combo length, how often the player was knocked down, and stylish posing.

Premise

The game follows Jonathan Joestar, heir to an English noble family, as his adoptive brother Dio Brando dons a cursed stone mask and turns into a bloodthirsty vampire bent on conquering the world. Jonathan trains in the mystical martial art of Ripple to gain the power to stop him, working through familiar antagonists from the arc such as Jack the Ripper, Bruford, and Tarkus before the final confrontation with Dio.

Release

Phantom Blood launched in Japan on October 26, 2006, as the second PlayStation 2 game based on the franchise after GioGio's Bizarre Adventure. It leans heavily on cutscenes, pairing static comic panel sequences with fully rendered 3D scenes and reusing the voice cast from the Phantom Blood anime film to recreate the manga's dialogue faithfully. The game never received an official release outside Japan.
