Somnambulist

Somnambulist, rendered as Nemuriga and translating roughly to sleeping fragrance, was the Quirk possessed by Pro Hero Nemuri Kayama. Classified as an Emitter power with medium-range reach, it debuted in Chapter 43 and was animated in Episode 23.

The concept is simple in outline: a sedative aroma seeps out through the user's skin and puts anyone breathing it into unconsciousness. The anime visualized that vapor as a lavender-purple haze. The term itself is the medical word for a sleepwalker.

It functions much like the Gas Quirk, with important differences. Nothing about Nemuri's fragrance was poisonous, it never affected her personally, and it lacked the strength to push a victim into a coma.

Potency was uneven between the sexes. Men succumbed far more readily than women, handing Nemuri a built-in edge in most confrontations, though enough exposure would put down anyone regardless. That made approaching her at close range a losing proposition.

Countering it required nothing more than keeping the scent out of your lungs. Opponents wearing masks that filtered air were effectively immune, and even improvised covering worked: Minoru Mineta shut the effect out by pressing a strip of Hanta Sero's Tape over his own mouth.

Her reduced grip on women was demonstrated at a bar mixer with poor airflow, where every man present dropped while the women around her carried on unaffected. Nemuri did later knock out Hina with a direct application, which suggests women simply required a concentrated dose. One reading of the series notes Hina was implied to be attracted to her friend Rin Yaritezawa, raising the possibility that the fragrance works best on those drawn to women.

Her costume created a practical obstacle as well. Legal pressure over its revealing design forced her into a bodysuit, and since the aroma has to escape through bare skin, she had to tear the covering away before the Quirk did anything. In an interview she described experimenting with thin fabrics chosen specifically for how easily they rip.

Nemuri Kayama was the only holder. The Quirk made her a natural fit for refereeing competitions, since she could shut down a dangerous play by putting the offending competitor to sleep on the spot.

In the field she carried a pair of hand fans to push the scent outward, letting her sedate groups from a safer distance while staying mobile. Her support gear was engineered to catch traces of the fragrance and hurl them in a chosen direction, giving her far better aim than raw diffusion allowed.

Capture work was where it paid off most. Enemies dropped by the aroma were trivial to restrain, and it handled targets that brute force could not, including Number 6 and Gigantomachia.
