Appearance

Backdraft's hands are the tell. Each one ends in a tap, ringed by a circular guard set just behind the opening and capped by a red valve, and a matching pair of valve-topped pads covers his knees. Everything else reads as firefighting gear: a long yellow coat with a tall collar, striped for high visibility down the front, the cuffs, and the hem, worn under a red fireman's helmet. A red tank rides on his back and feeds a slim cannon mounted at his left shoulder. His mask is white and featureless apart from one orange bead at the center, which may be an eye. Yellow sneakers finish it, and he stands 165 cm.

Personality

The series has kept Backdraft's inner life offscreen. His scenes convey professional orientation rather than character. He triages, delegates, and chases down equipment, and nothing beyond the job has been established about him.

History

Backdraft works out of the Musutafu Fire Department, and that posting shapes every appearance he makes. Water Pump produces water straight from the spigots standing in for his hands, and his control over it is precise enough to mold a barricade rail complete with X-shaped warning marks.

He debuts at the Sludge Villain incident, already tied up with the blazes Katsuki Bakugo's explosions have set. When Kamui Woods asks him to intervene against the villain, he declines: containment is taking him and another hero as it is. He demands to know whether the fire trucks have made it yet, and tells the assembled heroes to hold the damage down until somebody capable of ending the fight arrives. He later moves to stop Izuku Midoriya from running in after Katsuki, until All Might turns up and closes the matter with a single Detroit Smash. Backdraft and the others then collect the villain's remains and hand them to the Police Force.

Much later, during the Paranormal Liberation War, he is posted to the Hospital Raid Team under Endeavor, where he helps restrain the High-End Nomu known as Woman. He also appears to have come through Tomura Shigaraki's Decay wave alive.
