Chizuo Magi

Age and weight both showed on Chizuo, a big, soft-bodied old man. His hair carried the same color his daughter had.

He loved his family without reservation and showed it in small ways, pressing sweets on his grandson to lift the boy's mood. What went on in that house sickened him. Kotaro Shimura punished his children for so much as admiring heroes, and Chizuo, who seems to have understood that Kotaro's own mother Nana Shimura had been a hero and that Kotaro had never forgiven her for choosing strangers over him, said nothing. He and his wife were guests under that roof, and he feared being put out of it more than he trusted himself to speak.

The night Kotaro laid hands on Tenko, that calculation broke. Chizuo agreed with his wife and daughter that a line had been crossed and stood with them to confront the man at last. It came far too late. Nothing he had done or failed to do could keep the boy's resentment from turning into something that killed them all.

Chizuo and Mako Magi lived in the home of their daughter Nao and her husband Kotaro, who allowed them a daily part in raising the grandchildren. Chizuo watched the discipline harden by the week, culminating in Tenko being thrown out into the yard simply for playing hero with other kids. Mako asked whether Kotaro was being too strict about heroes; he conceded the point, then complained that his five-year-old still had no Quirk and told his in-laws they did not understand the misery heroes cause.

Later, after Chizuo had tried to cheer Tenko with candy, the boy and his sister Hana slipped into their father's study and found a photograph of Nana. Terrified of what would follow, Hana named Tenko when Kotaro discovered the intrusion, and the family stood and watched him take his anger out on the child. That night the three adults confronted him. Kotaro admitted he had gone too far; Mako told him the rules were finished if violence was how he meant to enforce them and asked whether he had not wanted a happy family. He answered that it was not supposed to turn out this way.

Hours later Decay woke in Tenko. The family dog died first, then Hana, killed by accident when she screamed instead of helping him. The scream brought Chizuo, Mako, and Nao to the yard, where they found what was left of her. Tenko reached for his mother, touched the ground, and the decay took the three of them, then Kotaro, then the house. Only Chizuo's hands survived. All For One recovered them, and the boy who became Tomura Shigaraki wore them on his villain costume.

Those hands stayed with Tomura long afterward. Cornered by Re-Destro's Stress in Deika City, with the hands on his suit being destroyed around him, his instincts overloaded and his memories came loose; he drew his father's preserved hand from his pocket, agreed that he existed only to destroy, and then crushed it and let his full power off the leash. His family surfaced again as constructs pleading with him not to follow All For One, which he tore apart. During the Final War, with his mind deteriorating and his Quirks erased, his defensive shell of hands shaped his left hand into the Shimuras' faces, a barrier he wielded from inside against All For One before shedding it once Izuku Midoriya battered him back into control.
