Rei Todoroki

Gray eyes with a permanently tired cast, framed by fairly long lashes, anchor a face built from soft round features that settle into mellow expressions when nothing is wrong. Her white hair falls straight to the shoulders, and long bangs are split three ways, two pieces framing the sides and one hanging down the middle, the same arrangement her daughter and youngest son wear. She stands at ordinary height and build for a middle-aged woman. Images from years earlier show her with a shorter cut and lighter eyes.

Her clothes stay simple, unpatterned, and plainly colored, a yellow jumper over an orange shirt being typical.

Stepping into the clash between Dabi and Endeavor during the Final War left burns and scarring across her body. Afterward her hair is cropped to the chin, and a wide scar crosses the upper left of her face and travels down to the opposite cheek, an unsettling mirror of the mark she once put on Shoto. Wrinkles arrive by the eight-year epilogue.

Enji once compared the young Rei to ice itself, which fit her reserve, though a glimpse of her favorite flower could still pull a smile out of her. She understood exactly what his proposal was, a Quirk Marriage, and accepted anyway because the money would keep her own family afloat, which says plenty about how much she loved them. Her options were narrow, but she walked into it hoping that if she just kept smiling the whole thing would somehow work.

Motherhood brought out warmth. She tried to pull Toya back from the training that was wrecking him, and her worry could not compete with his need for his father's approval; his apparent death devastated her even though he had cruelly blamed her for his birth. With Shoto she put herself between the boy and Enji's methods where she could, comforted him afterward, and told him that his father's blood bound him to nothing, that the person he became was his own to choose.

Years of abuse hollowed her out. She admitted to seeing her husband in her own children and feeling revulsion at it, and one day the sight of Shoto's left side triggered something she could not hold back: she emptied a kettle of boiling water over his face. Hatred had no part in it. Moments later she was reaching for her ice to soothe the burn, sobbing apologies and asking herself why she had done it.

Time in the psychiatric ward at Fujitani Hospital, away from her husband, gave her back the person she had been. When Shoto returned and told her he forgave her, she wept and smiled through it, and their bond was restored. Natsuo and Fuyumi visit too, and small gifts arrive from Enji, though fear kept her from facing him directly for a long stretch. That she could still recognize the struggle going on inside him showed Natsuo she had not lost her capacity for faith in people.

The gentleness masks real steel. Learning from Toya's broadcast that her eldest still lived and was now killing people in numbers, she did not collapse; she gathered the family instead. At the hospital where Enji and Shoto were being treated, with her husband weeping over his guilt, she reminded him that everyone else in the household had carried that weight longer and heavier, and told him she had come to talk about Toya. Her anger at him coexists with an admission that she too failed to see her son clearly, a guilt she insists is shared rather than his to shoulder alone.

Rei was born a Himura, into a bloodline carrying a formidable ice power, and married Enji Todoroki under an arrangement built around producing an heir who combined her cold with his flame. Four children followed: Toya, Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Shoto. Geten is a distant relative on her side, which makes her children distant relatives of his too.

Frost lets her create and control ice out of her body, potent enough that Enji specifically wanted it crossed with Hellflame. Unlike Geten, whose related power only pushes existing ice around, she generates her own at will. She has no combat experience and none of the technique her sons or her husband command, but her control is precise: she used it to chill Shoto's scalded face, and later coated herself in it to punch through the blazing inferno around Endeavor and Dabi before the two rose out of reach. Prolonged use costs her, bringing on frostbite and dropping her body temperature if she pushes further.

She was willing to die attempting that rescue, hero training or not. After the war she still refuses to write either man off, asking to speak with a dying Toya in the hospital and staying beside Enji once he steps away from hero work, telling him that however bleak the road ahead looks, he will not walk it by himself.
