Deku vs. Class A

Deku opens the fight he never wanted with a wall of Smokescreen. His classmates came briefed on every borrowed Quirk he has unlocked, and Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight rips the cloud apart using Land Mine Blast, ordering everyone not to let him slip away.

Float gets him airborne and straight into a flock of pigeons summoned by Anima, who shouts that the principal has already cleared his return. A Blackwhip tendril drags him free of the birds, and Cellophane's Tape catches his wrist while its owner remarks that the look he is sporting has started frightening people. Ripping loose, Deku remembers Cellophane helping him tame Blackwhip, and ducks a Heartbeat Wall from Earphone Jack, carried by Tsukuyomi's Dark Shadow. She tells him that it was small and probably means nothing, but the way he helped organize her notes before the School Festival genuinely made her happy.

Tailman dives in and locks him down with a Tornado Tail Dance, thanking him for standing in against Hitoshi Shinso on his behalf at the Sports Festival and telling him he does not have to do this alone in the state he is in. Deku breaks the hold, insists that staying puts every one of them in the sights of All For One, and is tackled through a wall by Tsukuyomi and Dark Shadow. Sugarman lands on a streetlight, Tailman and Earphone Jack tucked under his arms, and yells that if Deku will not hear them out, he can find his own food dye the next time Eri wants candy apples.

Indoors, Dark Shadow pins him to a wall, and Creati's restraints snap shut with a mask feeding him anesthetic gas. She explains the class originally meant to fight beside him, but with Endeavor and the others backing them the plan is now simply to get him somewhere safe. He wrecks the device and is flattened by Chargebolt and Tentacole, the latter naming his hypocrisy: at the training camp, teaming against the Vanguard Action Squad, Deku himself said their group had it in them to stand with All Might. Tsukuyomi wraps him in Ragnarok: Womb, a technique he credits to the strategy they built during the Cavalry Battle.

None of it holds. One For All floods through him and blows Deku out of the building into open sky, his mask and cowl torn away. He begs them to stop, points out that Danger Sense is quiet so he understands what they mean, and promises he is fine, and then slams into Shoto's Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall. Froppy and Shoto ask for honesty about what he actually feels, and for permission to carry some of it.

At Dictator's capture site, Endeavor hands the villain off and asks Red Riot, Invisible Girl, and Can't Stop Twinkling to help Hawks look after the civilians. Hawks calls suggesting Best Jeanist come restrain Deku at once, while the three students run for their classmate stuck in the ice. Endeavor tells him to keep the professionals off the children while they work.

Straining against the ice, Deku hears Shoto argue that this scattering is exactly what All For One might want, since U.A. sits exposed while its students hunt the city, and if he truly wants to protect his school and his friends he has to come back and let them stand with him. Deku tears out and flies, telling him the war is between two Quirks and nobody in Class 1-A can match that pace.

Below, Ingenium runs while Uravity leaps at her name. Overhead, Froppy slings Grape Juice by the tongue, and he tags Deku from behind with Mineta Beads. It was never the Quirk that made him think his friend was cool, he shouts, but what Deku did with it at the U.S.J., carving an escape for the two of them while every bit as frightened as Grape Juice himself. Deku apologizes, lowers him gently onto a roof with Blackwhip, and rockets off on Faux 100 Percent, barely clearing Uravity's grab. She calls out, and a ramp of ice with rails laid on it erupts across the city. Dynamight and Shoto ride it, coated in a low acidity Acidman from Pinky to cut drag, and Shoto fires a Flashfreeze Heatwave behind them to launch the pair onto an intercept. Uravity taps them weightless with her fingertips, Shoto drops away, and Dynamight uses Cluster to hold the line and close.

He has things to say, but they wait, because a third passenger was hidden in Pinky's acid: Ingenium, who fires his Engines and pulls ahead as the armor shreds off his costume. His hand closes on Deku's, and the claim that nobody could keep up dies right there. Deku tells him to let go. Ingenium refuses, crying and smiling, because he is the sort who runs anywhere to take a lost child's hand, and interfering where you were not asked is the whole point of the job. Too spent to break away, Deku is brought down as Uravity releases Zero Gravity and Red Riot hardens up to absorb the landing. Red Riot tells him he worked out that Deku was the kid he had heard about, the one who charged the Sludge Villain back before either of them reached U.A., and that whoever he was on that day had already proven his strength without a Quirk to lean on.

The rest catch up, and Pinky asks him to come back, because she does not want to lose anyone else. He refuses again. He wants to, but he is afraid of what he brings down on the people sheltering at U.A., and he says things cannot return to what they were. Then Dynamight steps up and Deku just stares at him. He admits his body moved on its own when Tomura ran him through with Rivet Stab. He admits he looked down on a Quirkless kid because he could not stomach that the boy was ahead of him everywhere else. Rejection turned into bullying, and once they shared a high school nothing went his way, every day a fresh measure of his classmate's strength set against his own smallness. Coming clean will not settle it, he says, but he wanted the truth said out loud. He bows and apologizes for years of it. One For All has let his classmate chase enormous ideals and he is not wrong to keep chasing, but some problems do not yield to conviction alone, and the parts he cannot handle should be handed to the people around him. Deku folds and passes out, caught by Dynamight, but not before apologizing for saying his class could never keep pace.

He wakes on Tentacole's back inside the reinforced U.A. Barrier, greeted by Thirteen, who tells him the heroes and police have the outside while he recovers. Beyond the gate the evacuees are screaming at him to leave, with Present Mic trying to hold the mob together. Deku turns to go, and Uravity stops him, telling him it will be all right, because herself, the class, and U.A. as a whole are stepping forward to keep him safe.

Class 1-A fights Deku to stop him from leaving, with nearly every student reminding him of something he did for them. Their combined maneuver, an ice ramp built by Shoto with acid lubrication from Pinky, weightlessness from Uravity, and Cluster from Dynamight, finally puts Tenya Ida within reach, disproving Deku's claim that they could not keep up.

Katsuki Bakugo publicly admits he bullied Izuku out of insecurity and bows in apology, the first time he has done so. Deku collapses and is carried home behind the reinforced U.A. Barrier, where hostile evacuees demand his removal and Ochaco Uraraka vows the class and the school will protect him.

The episode adapts Chapter 320 through Chapter 322 in the Dark Hero arc, airing in Japan on March 11, 2023, and in English on March 25.

Numerous staging changes appear. Deku fires one Blackwhip tendril from his wrist against Anima's pigeons rather than two from his back, Hanta's training flashback runs longer, Dark Shadow restrains him with an arm instead of his whole body and shows no fear, and Chargebolt is shown nervously charging Electrification as Deku breaks free. Grape Juice is set down gently rather than shoved aside, the ice ramp is far longer, Ingenium grabs Deku head on instead of from the side, and Red Riot pre-positions rather than catching the pair on the run. Pinky's tears are more pronounced in the manga. Trivia wise, the preview here restores Izuku's Go Beyond! Plus Ultra! call, absent since Episode 133.
