Summary

On a rooftop, Izuku asks the top-ranked hero whether someone born Quirkless could still do the job. Mid-answer, All Might runs out of time and shrivels into his gaunt true form. He shows the boy the wound he took five years earlier and explains that professionals must be prepared to gamble their lives, which is why he cannot honestly tell Izuku yes. Heading down the stairs, he discovers the captured Sludge Villain is gone and that explosions have started across town.

Near Tatooin Station, Katsuki has been chastising his friends when the same villain seizes him. Death Arms and other Heroes cannot break through, and All Might, already spent, can only watch and blame himself for the delay. Izuku wanders into the crowd, recognizes the creature he was rescued from, and realizes the situation traces back to him.

Then he sees Katsuki. Body moving before thought, Izuku bolts past the Heroes trying to stop him, hurls his bag at the villain the way his notes suggested, and claws at the sludge. Asked why he came, he says Katsuki's eyes were begging for help and he could not stand and watch him die.

Key Events

The villain rounds on Izuku, and All Might shields him, admitting he had lectured the boy about a standard he had just failed himself. A Detroit Smash obliterates the Sludge Villain and frees Katsuki at once.

In the aftermath the Heroes scold Izuku for recklessness and praise Katsuki for holding out. Katsuki later confronts Izuku to insist he never asked for saving and will not be looked down on. All Might finds Izuku again and tells him the truth: a Quirkless boy made the difference by doing exactly what the greatest Heroes have always done, moving before thinking in order to save someone. He tells him he can become a hero.

Notes

The episode adapts the back half of Chapter 1 and sits in the Entrance Exam arc. It is the first of very few installments whose title does not come from a chapter.

Several scenes are reworked. Katsuki and his friends walk through an alleyway rather than open ground, and he is scolding them over stealing arcade money rather than smoking, with the English dub swapping in a bar scheme. The anime adds Izuku spotting the smoke from the rooftop and talking himself out of investigating, shows him leafing past the autograph and the entries he wrote on Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods, and makes All Might's advice rather than his teacher's the line echoing in his head.

The Hero fight is expanded with Hitchcock Doodle, Slugger, and Death Arms attempting attacks, Mt. Lady wedged between buildings, and Kamui Woods lifting civilians clear. The Detroit Smash is thrown forward rather than downward, and the closing scene shows the Heroes addressing press and police instead of hauling rubble and bagging the villain. Hana Aoi from Kohei Horikoshi's Oumagadoki Zoo cameos.
