What I Can Do for Now

The judges review the entrance exam results and note the split: Katsuki Bakugo leads on points without earning any for rescue, while Izuku Midoriya took none in combat. All Might delivers the acceptance news to Izuku in person at Takoba Municipal Beach Park and warns that adapting to One For All is an ongoing process, using an egg in a microwave to make the point.

April arrives, and Inko stops her son on his way out to wish him luck. Izuku reaches Class 1-A hoping Katsuki and Tenya landed elsewhere, and finds the two of them arguing inside. Tenya introduces himself properly this time, and Ochaco does the same while thanking him for the save. Katsuki tries the old bullying line, that a Quirkless cheat has no business here, and for the first time Izuku pushes back.

Shota Aizawa cuts the conversation short by announcing himself as their homeroom teacher. He hands out gym clothes and marches the class to the P.E. Grounds for a Quirk Apprehension Test, since middle school never let them use their abilities. Katsuki serves as the demonstration: a middle school record of about sixty-four meters becomes well past seven hundred once Explosion is behind it. The enthusiasm evaporates when Shota adds that whoever finishes last is hopeless and expelled on the spot. Ochaco protests the unfairness and is told the world is unfair, and that fighting that is the job.

All Might, worried his successor will be singled out at once, comes to watch. Event after event, classmates shine while Izuku flounders, since One For All is all or nothing for him, and Katsuki's versatility carries him through everything.

By the pitching test, Izuku understands it is his last chance to prove anything. His throw fizzles, and Shota reveals his own power: erasing other people's Quirks. Izuku recognizes the Eraser Hero. The teacher explains that he cancelled the Quirk because its drawback is severe, that it makes Izuku a burden, and that he does not belong here. Given one more attempt, Izuku faces a trap: spend One For All now and be useless later, or hold it and fail this. He throws, and at the last instant funnels the power into his fingertips alone. The pitch detonates into a huge score, and his classmates, his teacher and All Might all take notice.

All Might personally confirms Izuku's admission to U.A. and begins explaining the adjustment One For All demands. Izuku stands up to Katsuki for the first time on their first day in Class 1-A.

Shota Aizawa introduces himself, launches the Quirk Apprehension Test, and threatens expulsion for last place. He erases Izuku's Quirk during the pitching event and questions his fitness for the course. Izuku responds by concentrating One For All into one fingertip, a targeted use that becomes the foundation of how he handles the Quirk.

The fifth episode of the anime, part of the Quirk Apprehension Test arc. It aired 1 May 2016 in Japan and 9 June 2018 in the United States, adapting chapters 5 and 6 plus the first page of chapter 7. The opening is THE DAY and the ending is HEROES.

The teachers' review of the exam runs longer on screen, with Katsuki gaining a new scene taking down a faux villain while Izuku's segment reuses footage from the previous episode; the manga instead shows Present Mic repeatedly cheering and Eraser Head thinking about the racket in his debut panel. Narration about the thirty-six admitted students split into two classes of eighteen, with no mention of recommendation entrants, is spoken by Izuku here, though the class list in chapter 7 actually totals twenty.

Other changes: only Tenya and Katsuki appear in the classroom until they notice Izuku, and the whole visible class notices him at once, prompting a nervous greeting before Tenya approaches. Katsuki's Explosion no longer disrupts Izuku's fifty-meter dash, Ochaco's Quirk is introduced as she prepares for the dash rather than afterward, middle school comparison scores for several students are dropped, and the newspaper item crediting nobody for the Takoba Beach cleanup is cut.
