Izuku and All Might open the episode directly, with Izuku pointing out that Class 1-A ought to be mid-examination. All Might waves this away in favor of a story about saving the world through love.

Rewinding to late July, before the training camp, All Might catches Midnight and Cementoss watching a broadcast about his early years training in America. The memory pleases him, and David Shield's name brings a smile.

Shota runs a special lesson for a handful of students at a time. This round brings in Izuku, Katsuki, Shoto, Tenya, Ochaco, and Tsuyu, with All Might, Cementoss, Midnight, and Present Mic on hand as guest instructors. The brief is tougher than a standard class: apprehend a hypothetical villain by investigating the scene and choosing the correct response.

In costume at Ground Beta, Shota lays out the scenario. Villains have seized a jewelry store, hostages included. Neither the number of criminals nor the number of captives is known, and the police have handed the matter to the heroes. He declines Tenya's question and sends them in blind.

Katsuki has Ochaco scout through a window while Shoto phones inside to distract the villain All Might is playing. Ochaco floats up and counts three hostages, played by Midnight, Cementoss, and Present Mic. All Might shifts near the doors, and the students stall. Impatient, Katsuki orders a rescue while he handles the villain, and they charge in to find the man dead, a bloodied knife nearby. Tenya concludes a hostage must be responsible, and Izuku insists on interviews first.

Cementoss claims to be the clerk who was attacked. Present Mic was shopping when the villain struck. Midnight walked in mid-robbery and was taken. Wallet checks confirm the shoppers could afford the merchandise. Katsuki wants to pin it on greed, Tsuyu objects that killing in the store would be absurdly reckless, Shoto notes the jewelry was never moved, and Tenya's sweep establishes the villain acted alone, which leaves only the hostages. Izuku, bothered by the barricade, hears Cementoss say the police had already been called and reasons that Midnight, the last to arrive, made that call. He proposes she knew the man beforehand, phoned ahead to stop him, and had no reason to kill him. The villain, Izuku concludes, took his own life to bury the relationship.

Shota ends the exercise, compliments the reasoning, and awards zero points. The body is gone. All Might, still in character, sprints off to freedom, having been alive the entire time. The fatal error was assuming a corpse and never restraining him. The students groan, then reach a second conclusion: a man who faked death to escape clearly felt no love for Midnight at all.

Back on campus, All Might opens an email from Melissa Shield inviting him to I-Island to reunite with David for an Expo event. He remembers telling David he intended to become the world's Symbol of Peace. Catching Izuku as the boy heads home, he extends an invitation. The two close the episode in a post-show segment: Izuku reports that there was no love, All Might says the movie will settle it, and the exam resumes next week.

Shota's advanced capture exercise fails all six participants because they treat a faking villain as a corpse and never restrain him.

Izuku assembles a complete and plausible chain of deductions about Midnight and the villain, earning praise from Shota but no points.

Melissa Shield emails All Might, asking him to come to I-Island and reconcile with her father David.

All Might invites Izuku to accompany him, setting up the events of the feature film.

The episode is entirely original to the anime and functions as a prologue to the film My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, which it credits as its source. It is framed by pre-show and post-show segments with Izuku and All Might.

In terms of continuity, this episode and the movie both fall after the Final Exams Arc and before the Forest Training Camp Arc rather than inside the license exam.
