Before the match, Hitoshi had laid out his Quirk for his temporary teammates: a target must answer him for Brainwashing to take, and silence defeats it outright. Denki noted the obvious problem once word spreads, which is exactly why Hitoshi carries Artificial Vocal Cords to borrow other people's voices. Vlad King started the round before they could plan further, a gap the team regrets almost immediately.

Persona Chords lands on Jurota, but Kosei snaps his teammate out of it with a smack and cages Hitoshi in an Air Prison, having been warned about the Brainwashing by Ibara, though nobody mentioned a voice changer. Denki charges in electrified and shocks Jurota through his own grip, only to be hurled away by the Beast's raw strength. Kosei jumps clear of the current and lands in Tsuyu's tongue, which wraps his mouth shut and carries him straight to jail. The celebration is brief: Jurota shrugs off the electricity and gives chase. Eijiro recovers, goes Unbreakable, and frees Koji, and the two block Jurota's path, but Re-Beast lets him drop back to human form to slip their attacks and grab both. Judging Eijiro the greater threat head-on, he throws him to Ibara, whose vines take him easily, and clamps a hand over Koji's mouth so no animals can be called. Denki and Tsuyu try to converge from two sides and are smelled coming. The exchange ends two captures to one in Class 1-B's favor, and Vlad King's lopsided commentary draws protests from the other side of the screen.

Freed from the Air Prison with a pair of metal pipes, Hitoshi blames himself for the captures, Tsuyu takes the fault for putting him on the front line without a plan, and Denki tells him the ambush would have wiped them out without him, and that he likes him regardless of the no-friends policy. Then Tsuyu builds the winning idea. One of Denki's pointers stuck to Jurota during the fight, so his visor can track the Beast anywhere, and her mucus, smeared over all three of them, makes them smell identical and useless to his nose. Jurota reports three Tsuyus incoming and only Izuku and Minoru, remembering her explanation of the Frog Quirk at the U.S.J., understand what that means. Ibara sweeps the field with Via Dolorosa and drags out a target, and Hiryu correctly guesses the worst case before Denki emerges. Crucifixion pins him behind Faith's Shield, and his attempt to route electricity through the pointer on Jurota's leg is foiled by Hiryu's scales knocking it loose. It was all bait. Hitoshi, close enough now, speaks in Hiryu's voice, and Ibara answers. Hiryu cannot locate the source through the echoes, and a paranoid Jurota refuses to say anything at all, gesturing one way and walking another, which leaves Hiryu alone against Tsuyu and their teamwork in pieces. Jurota tracks Hitoshi into the pipes, regretting that he underestimated a General Department student, and takes a pipe to the skull dragged down by the capture weapon. Recovering, he hears Hiryu screaming at him to dodge, dismisses it as another trick, and realizes far too late that Tsuyu had already beaten his teammate and thrown him like a projectile. The two heads collide, and Class 1-A takes round one.

Brainwashing's rules are spelled out: a verbal response is required, silence defeats it, and Artificial Vocal Cords exist to get around a target who knows better.

Tsuyu captures Kosei with her tongue, sealing his mouth to block Solid Air, the first elimination of the match.

Jurota's Re-Beast lets him switch forms mid-motion, and he takes both Eijiro and Koji out of the round.

Tsuyu's mucus masks the scent of all three remaining 1-A members, defeating Jurota's tracking, while a stray pointer on his leg lets Denki's visor track him.

Denki allows himself to be captured on purpose to draw Team 1-B's attention while Hitoshi closes in.

Hitoshi brainwashes Ibara using Hiryu's voice, collapsing the enemy team's communication, and Class 1-A wins round one when Tsuyu throws Hiryu into Jurota for a double knockout.

The fourth episode of season five adapts Chapters 196 and 197 and concludes round one of the Joint Training Battle.

The opening clash is restaged: in print Jurota is shocked while swatting Chargebolt away, while here he grabs him fully and takes the counterattack before throwing him. Red Riot freeing Anima from the Air Prison is an added beat, and Jurota no longer damages the platforms he leaps between.

The anime expands student commentary, moves Tsuyu's encouragement of Hitoshi to after Team 1-B is already jailed, adds Kosei waking Ibara from the Brainwashing along with her reaction to her own vines restraining her teammates, and inserts a standoff in the pipe maze where Jurota stops to hear Hitoshi speak before attacking.
