Episode 93

Eraser Head opens the debrief by asking his team what they learned. Eijiro admits his Quirk does almost nothing outside a fight, Koji wants to give his insects clearer instructions, Tsuyu regrets losing two members early and the coordination that went with them, and Hitoshi is angry at his own clumsiness with the Binding Cloth. Denki, meanwhile, bounces around congratulating himself. Shota tells Hitoshi to hold onto the frustration, since mastering that style took him six years, and Yuga reads Tsuyu and Eijiro as taking their own failures hardest because of what they went through on the Shie Hassaikai Raid. Kyoka laughs at how scattered Denki was by comparison. The advice comes fast: Eijiro should engineer one-on-one fights, Koji should aim at weaknesses, Denki gets scolded for only taking the match seriously once his teammates started falling, and Tsuyu is told to fix her mistakes rather than sit in them. Midnight is delighted that Hitoshi is not sulking, to All Might's mild discomfort. Vlad King blames his own team's loss on splitting up, and Jurota agrees, apologizing to Ibara for leaving her exposed as bait, before Neito rushes off to plan with Hitoshi for their own match. Watching that, Izuku's team starts strategizing, then Tenya's, then Katsuki's, once he has finished ordering everyone to stay out of his way. All Might notes how much the class has changed over the year and expects Hitoshi to be far more aggressive next time, while Shota frames the whole exercise as the boy's entrance test.

On the walk out to their starting points, Itsuka wants to know why Momo skipped the pageant, and hears that her class was never told, and that she was playing in the concert anyway. Itsuka explains the question: their shared commercial during the Uwabami internship left people filing them in the same box, which Toru compares to picking favorites in an idol group. Itsuka has no patience for that kind of ranking, treats Momo as a rival on her own terms, and says she has been waiting to fight her. Momo accepts. Shihai claims a similar rivalry with Fumikage over their shared taste in the dark, and Fumikage notes his Quirk, Black, which lets him travel through shadow. In the viewing area, Tetsutetsu answers a question about Itsuka's role in 1-B with a shouted tribute to how smart, brave, and steady their class representative is, calling her the group's big sister.

Momo sends Dark Shadow ahead to scout, and it finds Itsuka's team waiting near a cluster of chimneys, exactly the ambush position they wanted. Told to split up and leave the shadow to Shihai, the class boosts him with Manga's help, and he drops from an overhead pipe onto Dark Shadow's tether and takes it over. The possessed Quirk returns, punches Fumikage across the field, and briefly regains its own voice long enough to warn the team. Toru's Warp Refraction weakens it, Fumikage recalls it, and Shihai is ejected, escaping Momo's nets by merging into a pipe's shadow and reappearing above them, laughing. He announces he will beat Fumikage on the strength of their shared destiny, and Fumikage sheds his cloak to unveil Black Fallen Angel, his latest Ultimate Move. Shihai's actual target is Yuga, whose light is the one real threat to him, and he hauls the boy into the pipes confident nobody can follow. He is wrong. Fumikage rises behind him wearing Dark Shadow like a cloak with its claws spread into wings, a trick Izuku explains to a baffled Mina as buoyancy plus power, enough to carry a rider. Yuga is recovered and ordered to fire, flooding the area with light while Fumikage circles to intercept. Cornered on the pavement by Momo and Toru, Shihai is told they are ready for whatever 1-B tries, and he tells them not to be so sure. A mushroom sprouts on Momo's nose, more bloom across Toru and strip away her invisibility, and Shihai slips off in the confusion. Kinoko, hidden with Itsuka and Manga, admires her captain's foresight: light in the enemy's area means Plan A has failed, which is her signal to bury everything in mushrooms.

Shota debriefs round one, telling Hitoshi that the Binding Cloth style took him six years to master, and confirms to All Might that the Joint Training Battle doubles as Hitoshi's test for entry into the Hero Course.

Jurota takes responsibility for Class 1-B's loss, identifying the decision to split up as the mistake that let the opposing team plan together.

Itsuka declares Momo her rival, resenting the way outsiders lump the two of them together after their internship commercial with Uwabami.

Shihai possesses Dark Shadow and turns it against its own team, and is forced out only when Toru blinds it with Warp Refraction and Fumikage recalls the Quirk.

Fumikage debuts Black Fallen Angel, using Dark Shadow's buoyancy and strength to fly, and rescues Yuga from the pipes.

Kinoko Komori activates Itsuka's Plan B, flooding the battlefield with mushrooms that expose Toru and cover Shihai's escape.

Season five's fifth episode adapts Chapters 198 and 199 and covers the start of round two of the Joint Training Battle.

The anime shows how Shihai got inside Dark Shadow, with help from his own team, and adds commentary from the students throughout. In the manga Shihai leaves Dark Shadow on his own, while here Fumikage forces him out by recalling the Quirk, with Toru blinding it via Warp Refraction first.

Momo's nets also connect differently: one pins Shihai before he merges into a shadow and reaches the overhead pipe, whereas print has him dodge both entirely.

The official English localization renames Shihai's hero identity Vantadark and his Quirk Dark, almost certainly because Vantablack is a trademark whose artistic use is licensed exclusively to Anish Kapoor.
