Summary

Guards at Tartarus notice one inmate has grown restless overnight. One wants the sentencing done with; the other cites Gigantomachia's recent activity and the League of Villains still at large, warning against provoking unknown sympathizers. The prisoner, All For One, startles them by speaking, apologizing as old memories ache through him, saying he can hear his little brother's voice.

Just before round five starts, All Might takes an anxious call from Gran Torino, who relays that shortly after Nana Shimura inherited One For All she dreamt of a dark blurred shadow telling her the time had not yet arrived. All Might thanks him and returns to the match turning that phrase over. On the field, Izuku knows he cannot risk talking near Hitoshi Shinso and stays wary of Brainwashing. Neito, meanwhile, tells Hitoshi that people once said a Quirk like his ruled out heroism, that the two of them are alike, and that becoming heroes means being willing to act unheroically against stronger opponents. Hitoshi dislikes the comparison. Neito adds that childhood dreams can curdle into a burden, almost a curse.

Izuku volunteers as bait, planning to draw 1-B out with flashy moves so his team can converge. A barrel strikes at him, which he attributes to Reiko Yanagi's Poltergeist, and he seems to hear Ochaco scream somewhere distant. Spotting Neito below, he opens up with Air Force blasts. Neito taunts him: rather than remove the strongest first, they will strip away his backup, and perhaps that scream was only Hitoshi baiting him. Izuku recognizes the provocation for what it is, since Neito may well be carrying copied Brainwashing, and refuses to answer. Elsewhere, Reiko's controlled screws and bolts hit Ochaco, Mina, and Minoru; Mina raises an Acid Veil, Yui Kodai shrinks and enlarges the projectiles, Ochaco strips their weight, and Nirengeki Shoda's Twin Impact hurls them back anyway.

Neito escalates, asking how Katsuki can smile knowing his capture ended All Might. The rage takes Izuku, and instead of a blast, black tendrils burst from his arm, stunning Katsuki, Eraser Head, and All Might, who once more turns over what that time could mean. The power spirals beyond any control, wrecking the arena and slamming Izuku through buildings while he screams for Neito and then Hitoshi to run. All Might urges the teachers to stop the match. Izuku, terrified of burdening anyone again, is seized by Ochaco, who tells him to calm down. She remembers her exhausted parents, the joy on bystanders' faces at her first sight of a hero, and the question that came from watching Izuku push himself so hard: who looks after a hero once the hero is the one in pain.

Ochaco catches sight of Hitoshi and yells for him to use Brainwashing. Hitoshi, remembering the Sports Festival and how badly he wanted a rematch, pulls his Artificial Vocal Cords free and roars a challenge, demanding Izuku fight him. The command lands, the tendrils withdraw, and Izuku surfaces in the vestige world, where a large man in goggles berates him for treating the power thoughtlessly and insists he is not alone. Izuku cannot reply, having no mouth, and realizes the users are not mere echoes but conscious minds inside One For All. Fading, the man identifies the tendrils as his Quirk, Blackwhip, explains that Quirk Factors from the holders before him blended into One For All's core and have begun to grow, and says it surfaced because Izuku wanted to capture Neito, a task it suits. He warns that One For All has amplified it enormously, that anger will feed it, that Izuku must govern his heart, and that six Quirks are coming to the one who will complete One For All.

Ochaco slaps Izuku awake and he sees Blackwhip has hurt her. Neito lunges, Ochaco drives him off with Gunhead Martial Arts, and Yui and Nirengeki arrive to pin them, lamenting the ruined plan before Mina and Minoru join the fray. Izuku seizes the Capturing Weapon as Hitoshi swings it toward Ochaco. Asked what to do, Eraser Head decides to let the match continue, which startles All Might, and the two students square off again.

Notes

The final pages of Chapter 209 and Chapters 210 through 213 are adapted here, with No.1 and Footprints as the themes. This is Blackwhip's debut.

Adaptation changes include added student commentary, a second introduction for Neito's Copy, and an extra beat in Ochaco's flashback in which she helps an elderly woman with her Quirk. The anime has Izuku and Neito exchange attacks before Blackwhip triggers, while the manga fires it off first. Neito also rides two small nuts in the anime instead of a single enlarged one.

The anime's subtitles render Nirengeki's hero name as Mindz.
