Summary

Fuyumi and Natsuo Todoroki visit the hospital where their mother lives and find Rei doing well. Fuyumi leaves extra clothing against next week's cold, which Rei welcomes as someone who loves winter weather, and she is glad to see Natsuo looking lively. Fuyumi is less glad that her brother has not come home since running off to college and acquiring a girlfriend, and he defends himself, embarrassed, before complimenting their mother's healthy complexion. Rei mentions the letters Shoto has been sending and her happiness that he is working to catch up with his classmates through the supplemental licensing classes. Natsuo wonders why his brother does not simply text, and Fuyumi cites his busy schedule.

After a silence, Natsuo brings up Endeavor's rise to Number One. Fuyumi tries to stop him, but Rei lets him continue. He talks about their father's heinous treatment of the family and how the world knows none of it, admits he holds few positive memories of the man and considers him a complete stranger, and says his real fury is over Shoto and his mother, and over a father who behaves as though it never happened. Ten years have passed without an apology, he notes, and the man is leaving his past and his blood relatives behind. Rei disagrees, which startles her son. Looking at the flowers near the window, she recalls telling her husband when they first met that she liked them, then reveals that he has come to visit many times since, never face to face, a fact that shocks Fuyumi. She is still frightened of him and her doctor has advised against meeting him directly, but she is certain he is abandoning neither his past nor his family, and is instead trying to face it all head on.

Meanwhile, Endeavor squares off with High-End. Hawks is surprised he can fly, a description Endeavor rejects in favor of "not falling," and he warns his colleague against underestimating the thing. High-End regenerates and mocks the foolishness of trying to finish it in one strike. Endeavor recognizes the healing as the sort the black Nomu carry, where the white ones have no special Quirks at all, and concludes the black ones are the high-quality builds stocked with powerful abilities. This one, able to speak, strikes him as special even among those. He decides to take it alive so it can be interrogated, and opens with Hell Spider, five streams of fire thrown from his fingertips. Two connect and nothing slows: the Nomu lunges, drives him into the building with tremendous force, and sends him out the far side. A great flare of flame burns its arm off him, the limb grows back at once, and it seizes him again and hammers him across the structure before hurling him out. Endeavor rights himself and takes the measure of what he is facing.

The top half of the building starts to collapse from the impact. Hawks uses Fierce Wings, which gives him command over feathers that are both strong and pliable, to get the injured civilians out first. Once his feathers are ferrying people down to safety, he joins the fight himself and lands three of them in the creature's arm. Endeavor follows with an advanced Flashfire Fist version of Hell Spider, whose multiple streams cut the Nomu's body up. Asked whether that was his strongest, he says it is not even close. High-End, knitting itself back together, remarks that the fight is getting interesting.
