The first round of the tournament burns through five matchups at speed, one of them decided by a competitor who deliberately walks out of bounds after making her sales pitch. By the last page only one bracket slot remains, and it belongs to Ochaco Uraraka against Katsuki Bakugo.
Round one's third bout is finished almost before it starts. Ibara Shiozaki turns Denki Kaminari's Electrification back on him, her Vines giving her a clean type advantage. Up in the stands Izuku Midoriya is already scribbling notes on her Quirk, which prompts Ochaco Uraraka to remark that he has been like this for as long as she has known him. She then excuses herself, saying she needs to get to the waiting room.
Match four pits Tenya Ida, loaded down with borrowed support gear, against its inventor. Mei Hatsume spends the bout advertising her equipment to the crowd rather than trying to win. Ten minutes of chasing later, satisfied that her products have been properly showcased, she strolls out of bounds and hands Tenya the victory. He is not remotely pleased about being used as a display stand.
Tenya reaches the waiting room and finds Ochaco there. Izuku turns up soon after to check on her and reports that matches five and six were over in an instant. Mina Ashido beat Yuga Aoyama by sabotaging his belt, and Fumikage Tokoyami beat Momo Yaoyorozu by striking before she could Create anything. Ochaco admits she is worried about facing Katsuki. Tenya suggests he might ease up because she is a girl, and she flatly disagrees, since easing up is not something Katsuki does.
Elsewhere the seventh match grinds on, Eijiro Kirishima and Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu trading blows without either giving ground. Izuku offers to work out a strategy against Katsuki for her, and she turns him down, telling him she will manage. Eijiro and Tetsutetsu batter each other into a draw, both too spent to continue, so an arm wrestling match will decide who advances. Ochaco heads out, telling the two boys she will see them in the finals.
With that, the last bout of the round is set: Katsuki Bakugo against Ochaco Uraraka.
Ibara defeats Denki. Tenya defeats Mei, who tricks him into wearing her support items so she can demonstrate them to the support companies watching from the crowd. Mina defeats Yuga, and Fumikage defeats Momo.
Eijiro and Tetsutetsu fight to a draw. Tournament rules call for an arm wrestling match to settle a tie, which will determine who moves on.
Izuku offers to help Ochaco plan a way to beat Katsuki. She declines, telling him she sees him as a rival.
The final first round match, Ochaco against Katsuki, is set to begin.
Kohei Horikoshi titled this chapter Battle On, Challengers!, romanized Furue! Charenjā. It ran nineteen pages in issue 17 of 2015 on March 16, expanded to twenty-one pages for volume 4, and was adapted as Episode 21.
Mt. Lady, Kamui Woods, Denki Kaminari, and Ibara Shiozaki appear on the cover, which also exists in a published sketch version.

Naruto vs Luffy with the twist nobody asked for: Luffy tickled Hinata on date night, and she kind of liked it. We break down the whole fight and commit to a winner....

There are no women on Namek. That isn't an oversight, it's the biology. Why we handed Piccolo the one thing his own species rules out, and why it had to be trap soul....
Chapter 35 of My Hero Academia covers the closing matches of the U.A. Sports Festival's first round, including Ibara Shiozaki's win over Denki Kaminari, Tenya Ida's win over Mei Hatsume, and Eijiro Kirishima's draw with Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu. It ends by setting up the final first-round bout between Ochaco Uraraka and Katsuki Bakugo.
Tenya Ida wins after Mei Hatsume spends the entire bout showcasing her support gear to the crowd rather than trying to win, then walks out of bounds once she is satisfied her products have been displayed.
Eijiro Kirishima and Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu fight to a draw, both too exhausted to continue, so tournament rules send the match to an arm wrestling contest to decide who advances.
No, Ochaco Uraraka turns down Izuku Midoriya's offer to plan a strategy against Katsuki Bakugo, telling him she will handle the match herself.
Chapter 35 ends with the final first-round matchup set: Ochaco Uraraka against Katsuki Bakugo.
