A corrupt official who once served the ruler of the Land of Tea, this minister abuses his post for private gain. His scheming around a town-deciding footrace between two rival families finally exposes his bribe-taking and strips him of everything.
Advanced in years, the minister keeps his grey hair cropped smooth to about ear length and sports a small round moustache of matching grey. Dark brows sit above narrow, black eyes. A compact cup-shaped hat in black rests atop his head, held in place by a white cord knotted beneath his chin.
Domineering by nature, he assumes people can be bent to his will, convinced that a little pressure will make anyone serve his aims.
During an escort assignment in the Land of Tea, the minister throws in with the Wagarashi family and helps arrange a race meant to settle who controls the town. Their challenger is Idate Morino, running for the Wasabi family under Jirōchō Wasabi. Behind the scenes, the minister has spent his tenure pocketing bribes on the Wagarashi's behalf and leaning on his office to rig the contest, a plot that nearly forces the Wasabi to break apart for good.
Once the ruler of the Land of Tea uncovers the truth, he casts the minister out, revokes every scrap of his authority, and sentences him to live as a monk.
