Genma Shiranui is a special jonin of Konohagakure and a trusted member of the Hokage's guard detail, easy to spot by the senbon he keeps between his teeth. Calm and quick-witted, he serves through the Chunin Exams, the Sasuke recovery effort, and the great war.
Genma keeps a senbon perched between his lips at nearly all times, his signature quirk. His brown hair falls to shoulder length and drifts loosely around his face, framing brown eyes, and he ties his forehead protector bandanna-style rather than as a headband. Day to day he wears the standard jonin uniform. In his genin years his look ran darker, built around a hooded jacket in red and black, a baggy outfit, a black choker, and a strap fastened around one leg, the senbon already a fixture even then.
Steady and even-keeled, Genma keeps his cool under pressure and carries an unruffled, self-possessed air; he is rarely rattled and comfortable directing large squads of ninja. Beneath that composure runs a jokester streak, and he is known to crack wise even at tense moments, enough that Shikaku Nara once had to warn him against making light of a dire report before delivering it. He holds a particular dislike for Orochimaru's habit of throwing his power around.
Genma came up as a genin on a squad led by Choza Akimichi that also held Might Guy and Ebisu, and during their Chunin Exams they crossed paths with Minato's team. A brush with a generation of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist nearly ended them until Might Duy intervened. He later rose to the elite detail that shields the Hokage, and while the Fourth held office he was taught the Flying Thunder Formation Technique so he could teleport to the leader's side in a crisis.
His skills earned him hard assignments and a place among the Hokage's bodyguards. He can spit a senbon with enough force to knock a kunai aside, and he once traded blows with a jonin of Baki's caliber, halting two of the man's airborne kunai with two of his own. Worn down from an earlier mission, he still teamed with Raido Namiashi to drive the Sound Four into triggering the second tier of those cursed seals. That clash left both guards badly hurt, and Shizune had to stabilise them before hauling them back to the Leaf.
During the Chunin Exams arc he took over as proctor for the final matches after Hayate was killed, and following Naruto's bout with Neji he offered the Hyuga a quiet lesson about caged birds learning to free themselves. When Orochimaru's invasion erupted he squared off with Baki, urged Sasuke to pursue the retreating Gaara, and saw the duel cut short once the assault was called off. Later he and Aoba announced Tsunade's rise to Fifth Hokage. In the Fourth Shinobi World War he and Raido stood watch over the feudal lords, and when Black Zetsu came for them, Mei Terumi and her team joined the defence. Acting on Shikaku's orders, Genma, Raido, and Iwashi used Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique to whisk Mei and then Tsunade onto the battlefield against Madara, after which they chased the Kabuto-controlled Mu alongside Dodai until the Impure World Reincarnation was undone. When Naruto and Sasuke dispelled the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Genma was freed with the rest of the world, and on the day the Sixth Hokage was installed he stood guard at the village gate.
