Karura belongs to Sunagakure as the spouse of Rasa, the village's Fourth Kazekage, and the mother of Temari, Kankuro, and Gaara. Giving birth to Gaara costs her life, yet the devotion she voices in her final moments lingers on in the protective sand that guards him.
Indigo eyes and sandy-brown hair worn to the shoulders lend Karura a gentle face. Her outfit is plain, set off by a long scarf of pale yellow that hangs loosely at her throat.
A gentle, kindhearted woman, Karura holds her family closest of all.
Temari and Kankuro come to Karura and Rasa before she carries their third child. Seemingly over her husband's objections, she is compelled to let Shukaku, one of the tailed beasts, be sealed away inside the baby she still carries. The toll is cruel: Gaara arrives too early and Karura dies in the same hour. As her physicians run out of options and her heartbeat gives out, she begs to hold her boy, and looking on the tiny, fragile newborn she swears to shield him whatever comes before she slips away. That fierce resolve lets her thread her own chakra through Gaara's sand, which then stirs by itself to guard him from every threat, his own recklessness included, rising into a barrier shaped like her when it stands complete. For much of his childhood Gaara believes a falsehood, since Yashamaru is pushed into telling him his mother despises him and wants him made into her weapon of vengeance against Sunagakure, a lie that warps how the boy understands love. Not until the Fourth Shinobi World War does Gaara uncover the truth of how she died, and afterward both Rasa and Yashamaru hold that it is her devotion, not the chakra of Shukaku, that lingers in the sand protecting him.

We ranked the six most popular women of Naruto from worst to first, and our number one is going to start a fight. The official poll got it wrong....

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
Karura is the wife of the Fourth Kazekage Rasa and the mother of Temari, Kankuro, and Gaara in the Hidden Sand Village. She dies giving birth to Gaara after agreeing to have the tailed beast Shukaku sealed inside him.
Yes, Temari is Gaara's full sister. Both are children of Karura and Rasa, along with their brother Kankuro.
Karura, Gaara's mother, died in childbirth after Shukaku was sealed inside her unborn son, causing him to arrive too early. In her final moments she begged to hold Gaara and vowed to protect him no matter what.
Yes, Karura loved Gaara deeply, even though Yashamaru later lied and told Gaara that she hated him. Her devotion lives on in the sand that instinctively shields Gaara from harm.
The sand that guards Gaara is powered by Karura's own chakra and her dying vow to protect her son, not by the malice of Shukaku as Gaara originally believed. He only learns this truth during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
