Appearance

Kasumi carries the look of a priestess, with long dark hair, a white kimono, and a black choker. Over her face rests a curse mask bearing a red serpent along its left side, a gift from Orochimaru, while a bellflower hair ornament, given to her by Jiraiya to signify gratitude, can be uncovered by players who follow his side of the story.

Personality

At heart Kasumi is a gentle princess who dreams of a home full of laughter and is generous toward the guards and attendants who serve her. The mask feeds on hatred, and her grief over the loss of her castle hardens her into the vindictive Princess Dusk, who swears she will never forgive the intruders. As her cherished keepsakes are returned to her, that bitterness cracks and her true, kind self resurfaces.

History

Her power flows from the mask and her bond with Castle Dusk: she conjures illusions, senses approaching shinobi, suppresses any dojutsu used within the walls, and can even make her illusions solid, once producing copies of Gaara to attack Naruto. Her true home was destroyed in an assault by Orochimaru, who lured her into donning the mask with the promise of great power; so long as her hatred smouldered, it would never come off, and her spirit was bound into the fortress. When the castle, now called the Mugen Castle, rises in Konohagakure one night, Naruto, Sakura, Shikamaru, and Hinata investigate and encounter Princess Dusk, who hurls illusion after illusion at them, among them reanimated foes such as Itachi, Kisame, and Shizune. Peeling away the seals that hold the castle together releases its buried memories, uncovering the princess's kindness and slowly exposing the truth of Orochimaru's deceit. Naruto refuses to give up on her, shielding her from Kabuto's soul-sealing at great cost to himself and returning the charms, ribbon, and music box that had once meant everything to her. As each keepsake reaches her the mask fractures, until it finally shatters and her real face is revealed. Together they destroy the castle, and Kasumi's spirit thanks Naruto before fading; where the barren ruin once stood, a field of flowers is left behind.
