The anime paints him carrying a grudge against Iwagakure, whose shinobi took his father's life. On duty he stays concentrated and places real value on the survival of everyone fighting at his side.

As a medical-nin, Kiri channels the Mystical Palm Technique to close wounds, and he proved a shrewd planner, helping Kankurō lay out an ambush. The anime places him among a band of Mist ninja who trailed Ganryū to an islet off the Land of Water to kill an Iwagakure messenger. When Ganryū called off the hunt after learning it defied the Fifth Mizukage's wishes, Kiri was one of those who grumbled, though the group withdrew once Naruto's shadow clones drove them back. During the Fourth Shinobi World War he served with the Surprise Attack Division, trading battle plans with Kankurō and tending the injured Zaji beneath a stone shelter Ittan raised. His unit was later caught in Ibuse's Poison Mist and overcome, only to be carried to the medics by samurai of the Fifth Division.
