Kokatsu is a former shinobi and the father of Kawaki, an embittered drunkard whose cruelty and greed set his son on the path that eventually placed the boy in Jigen's hands.
Selfishness ran through Kokatsu to the core, and he cared for no one beyond himself. A quick-tempered drunk given to bullying, he vented his moods on anyone within reach, and his own son bore the worst of it. Kawaki suffered constant physical abuse at his hands, denied meals over the slightest fault and shut away in a room whenever the boy disappointed him. The mistreatment was verbal as well, since Kokatsu repeatedly branded his son hollow and worthless. He even pushed the child into odd jobs around town simply to fund his drinking. Nothing revealed his contempt more plainly than the ease with which he handed Kawaki over to Jigen, then walked on with his life untroubled.
Whatever trials Kokatsu had lived through wore him down over the years, leaving a resentful man who sought comfort in the bottle. In time he fathered Kawaki, whom he treated with open cruelty. On one occasion he shut the boy away after Kawaki accidentally shattered a bottle of his liquor, and it was that night that Jigen came to the house with an offer to purchase the child. Kokatsu accepted on the spot, casting Kawaki off without a shred of reluctance and departing the small home with his newfound money in hand.
Word held that Kokatsu had once served as a shinobi and even stood among the heroes of the Fourth Shinobi World War, yet his coarse and thuggish manner led many to question whether the boast held any truth. No feats of skill were ever shown to back the reputation.
