Minato Namikaze

For all he resembled his son physically, Minato struck Jiraiya and Tsunade as Naruto's opposite in temperament: humble, level-headed, and never one to act without a reason. Keenly aware of the dread his name inspired in rival villages, he would use it to his advantage while still treating even dangerous criminals like Orochimaru with courtesy. He avoided prying into others' affairs and held no grudges, pitying Obito rather than hating him and later talking Kakashi out of killing the man. If anything, he blamed himself, for failing to save Obito, for the troubles that fell on Konoha after his death, and for the hard life his orphaned son would endure. He shared Naruto's indomitable spirit and unwavering loyalty, along with a weakness for absurdly long-winded technique names.

Minato enrolled at Konoha's Academy chasing a single dream: to earn the village's respect and rise to Hokage. Placed in Kushina Uzumaki's class, he was captivated by her red hair, and his rare, generational talent drew the eye of Jiraiya, who took him on as a personal student and passed down many of his own techniques. The Sannin came to suspect the boy might be the Child of the Prophecy destined to save the world. That promise showed early when Kumogakure abducted Kushina; only Minato noticed the strands of hair she had scattered to mark her trail, and he rescued her alone. His confession of admiration on the way home won her heart.

The feat spread his name far beyond the Land of Fire. As the Third Shinobi World War drew Konoha in, Minato split his energy between protecting Kushina and turning the tide of battle. After warping his team clear of a tailed-beast assault by two Iwa jinchuriki, he studied the Tailed Beast Ball and spent three years crafting the Rasengan, a gift meant to let Kushina defend herself. Given his own squad of Rin Nohara, Obito Uchiha and Kakashi Hatake, he drilled teamwork into them, though the loss of Obito during the mission to destroy the Kannabi Bridge marked him deeply, as did Rin's death soon after. His repeated encounters with the Kumo shinobi A grew into a rivalry, and his single-handed rout of a thousand Iwa ninja pushed the enemy toward a peace treaty.

His wartime record saw him chosen over Orochimaru as Fourth Hokage, and he taught the Flying Thunder God Technique to the Hokage Guard Platoon. Because Kushina's sealing of the Nine-Tails would weaken as her pregnancy ended, the birth was moved to a guarded site outside the village. The couple named their son Naruto after the hero of Jiraiya's first novel. Moments after the delivery, the masked Tobi struck, killing the guards, seizing the infant, and tearing the Nine-Tails out of Kushina to unleash it on Konoha. Minato saved his family, branded Tobi with a seal, and used a Contract Seal to strip the beast from his control.

With the fox still rampaging, Minato dropped Gamabunta onto it and transported it to Kushina and Naruto, the farthest point from the village. Rejecting Kushina's wish to have it sealed back into her so it would die with her, he chose to entrust its power to their son, believing Naruto was the prophesied child. With the Dead Demon Consuming Seal he sealed the Yin half of the Nine-Tails into himself and the Yang half into the newborn, weaving his own and Kushina's chakra into the seal to aid the boy in years to come. Both parents shielded Naruto with their bodies when the fox lashed out. His final request to the Third Hokage was that the village see Naruto as a hero rather than a monster, before the Shinigami claimed his soul.

Years later, reincarnated through the Impure World technique at the climax of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Minato fought beside the other Hokage and his grown son, warping away a tailed-beast attack, striking down his former student Obito, and combining a Rasengan with Naruto in Tailed Beast Mode. He wished Naruto a happy birthday once the fighting ended before returning to the afterlife. His student Kakashi became Sixth Hokage and Naruto the Seventh, while his grandchildren Boruto and Himawari inherited his gift.

Minato ranked among the most powerful shinobi ever to live, judged unmatched in his prime by the likes of Jiraiya and the Fourth Raikage and counted among the few who could face a tailed beast head-on. His style hinged on appearing and downing foes in an instant, usually without the delay of hand seals. Trained by Jiraiya, he could summon the toad boss Gamabunta, served as a gifted sensor able to track chakra from great distances, and commanded fire, wind, lightning, yin and yang natures.

His Rasengan, developed over three years from studying the Tailed Beast Ball, required no hand seals and could be formed in either hand and scaled up at will. The Flying Thunder God Technique earned him the Yellow Flash title, letting him teleport instantly to any mark he had placed, carry allies along, or fling incoming threats away, and he paired it with his own triple-pronged kunai scattered across the battlefield. His fuinjutsu ran from the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style to the Dead Demon Consuming Seal and the Contract Seal, while his natural speed and Body Flicker made him the fastest shinobi of his era. After his reincarnation he wielded Nine-Tails Chakra Mode with the fox's full cooperation, and he could even enter Sage Mode, though limited practice kept him from holding it for long.
