Mugino

Glasses sit on Mugino's angular, strong-jawed face. He dresses in the usual Leaf uniform, its flak vest paired with a headband he ties bandana-style. For the anime, a striped orange warmer is added around his neck.

Konohamaru describes Mugino as wholly selfless, a man who would sooner die than slow his allies down, a resolve he proved by throwing himself at Ao in a suicidal charge. Long stretches of nonstop assignments left him guarded and slow to trust, and he reads every situation coldly, chasing the most logical answer. Steady under pressure, he endures danger without cracking, yet his blunt rationality makes him hard to talk to, since he assumes everyone thinks as clearly as he does.

He lives with almost nothing on purpose, wary of greed, but treasures the few things he keeps, chief among them a photograph of Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Hokage's handwritten welcome to the village. He softens toward struggling children. His one loose thread is money: he runs up restaurant tabs and leans on younger ninja to cover him, though he always settles what he owes. Away from work he loosens up, sharing drinks with friends.

Trusted with a three-year campaign to quell flare-ups across smaller nations, Mugino earned praise from Konohamaru, one of the Leaf's finest jonin, who credited much of his own survival to him. He excelled at taijutsu, evading and pinning foes and manhandling opponents far larger than himself, and carried deep chakra reserves plus a high tolerance for pain, fighting on after a kunai to the chest. His Earth Release could collapse caverns to bury a target or, in the anime, spit stone rounds, and he worked fuinjutsu in tandem with others to shatter barriers.

He had first come to Konoha as an orphaned refugee, coerced by Kiri ninja into an assassination attempt on Hiruzen. The Third saw through it, noticed the cursed seal branded on the boy, and let himself be stabbed so he could catch and subdue the handlers, then offered the child a home. Mugino arrived to accept that offer only after the Konoha Crush, unaware the Hokage had died. In the years that followed he grew close to Konohamaru, saving his life on several missions.

When he finally came home from that long deployment, Mugino was folded into a search-and-rescue in the Land of Valleys with Team 7, chosen for his knowledge of the region. Their client's husband, a researcher named Anato, had vanished, and the trail led to a cave where they found him warped into a mindless, shapeless attacker. Victor, the local company president, subdued Anato and promised treatment. On the way back Mitsuki fell ill with the same affliction, and Mugino brought the team to the reclusive medic Yubina, who traced the cause to the First Hokage's cells being trafficked on the black market.

Following the source through the Land of Silence, the group tangled with Kirisaki, impersonated him to reach Lady Sakuya, and were framed for her murder so the real killers could flee with the Hashirama Cell. A boy named Katara sheltered them in the city's underground child network while they regrouped. The hunt drew in Omoi's Kumo squad and the carbon-wielding Deepa, and led to a clash with the Haze thief Yuga, whose self-destructive technique caged them with a chakra-draining demon. Mugino let the creature siphon his own energy long enough for Konohamaru and Boruto to blast it apart with their Rasengan. The trail eventually exposed Victor's hidden God Tree experiment; Mugino escorted the region's daimyo to safety and was saved from Victor's secretary by Orochimaru's sudden arrival. Afterward he and Konohamaru reported what they had uncovered about Victor's ties to the organisation Kara.

His end came during the Ao affair. Assigned with Konohamaru to inspect a downed airship on the village outskirts, Mugino was ambushed by one of the wreck's autonomous puppets. When Ao later turned on the group, Mugino moved to pin him and was run through by a blade concealed in the rogue Kiri-nin's prosthetic. Mortally wounded, he brought the cave down on Ao and himself so the others could escape. Before that mission he had asked Boruto to look after his pet turtle; the boy kept the promise, and the turtle was ultimately adopted by Konohamaru along with the old letter of welcome. Mugino was laid to rest in the Konoha Cemetery, where Konohamaru returns to speak with him and renew his vow to guard their home.
