History

Praised by both Akahoshi and the Third Hoshikage, Natsuhi was a formidable kunoichi, and Akahoshi genuinely believed she could best any Kage. She was among the rare few to survive the secret and hazardous star training, and rarer still in escaping its harmful aftereffects. Her command of the Mysterious Peacock Method let her spin a rope of chakra and grow wings to fly, launch the feathers of those wings as attacks, and shape her chakra into the form of an animal. She could merge two attacks of the same type to multiply their force, and she overwhelmed Akahoshi despite his having completed the same training. She was also adept at sensing and identifying individual chakra signatures. With her final breath she performed a Reincarnation Ninjutsu, briefly returning as a ghostly apparition able to use her living techniques, deflect attacks, and even be duplicated by a Shadow Clone. She held knowledge of fuinjutsu as well, having tried to seal the Star, and was a talented cook whose food Naruto devoured eagerly.

Long before the events of the series, Natsuhi and Hotarubi both finished Hoshigakure's star training, then stole the Star once they saw the damage it caused. The Third Hoshikage caught them and staged a banishment so they could watch over the village from outside, on the promise that the training would end. The couple asked him to let their son Sumaru believe they had died long ago and left the boy Hotarubi's necklace. After Hotarubi succumbed to the training's effects, Natsuhi carried on protecting the village alone.

When Naruto Uzumaki arrived in Hoshigakure alongside Tenten, Rock Lee, and Neji Hyuga for a mission, Natsuhi had stolen the Star again, prompting Akahoshi to seize her son as leverage. She returned it, tried once more to take it back, and was ultimately lured into a trap set by Akahoshi and his henchmen, dying as she attempted to destroy the Star with fuinjutsu. With her last strength she painted a symbol in her own blood, and when one of Sumaru's tears struck it she returned in a ghost-like form. After Akahoshi set the Star into his own chest to swell his chakra, Naruto found himself unable to wound him, until Natsuhi's apparition sang the lullaby she had shared with Sumaru, lending Naruto the chakra to briefly fly and finally defeat Akahoshi. Her name, meaning summer fire or summer day, ties to the lullaby Natsuhiboshi, the summer day star, that she sang to her son.
