Shikadai Nara

Shikadai carries a clear family likeness to both his father and grandfather, down to the black, spiky hair pulled into a ponytail, though his teal eyes come from Temari. His expressions are noticeably sharper than his father's, another trait he seems to owe to his mother. As is customary for his clan, grey studs pierce both ears.

As an Academy student he wears a green jacket, its sleeves and collar in yellow, above blue trousers. His genin outfit is a cream zipped jacket bearing a simple Nara emblem on the back, with his forehead protector wound around a sleeve. Three years after Boruto leaves the village, he switches to a black jacket lined with green, the clan symbol picked out in green and the forehead plate stitched above one bicep.

In temperament Shikadai closely mirrors Shikamaru, sharing the same easygoing, low-effort outlook. He treats most activities as a bother and slips out of them whenever he can, and like his father he mutters "complete" whenever a plan or technique comes together. From Temari he inherits a blunt, plain-spoken streak, and his lax attitude extends to rank, greeting his uncle the Kazekage with no ceremony at all.

Underneath the laziness sits genuine pride in his clan and a firm moral code; he refuses to let his family down and once turned down an S-rank job on realising it was only a pretext to reach his father. Described as a dedicated gamer, he was personally stung when Boruto admitted to cheating in a video game, and he later conceded their Chunin Exam bout on the principle that a player should know when to withdraw and fight another day. His bond with Boruto runs deep beneath their rivalry; the two are close from childhood, and Shikadai accepts Hinata's quiet request to keep an eye on her son. He grew up sharing sleepovers with Inojin and Chocho and developed a sibling-like closeness with Mirai Sarutobi through their training under his father.

Hailed as a prodigy among the Nara, Shikadai combines his father's intellect with the Kazekage bloodline. His training was overseen from early childhood by his parents and by Mirai, who also drilled him in breaking free of genjutsu. That talent made him the earliest in his graduating year to reach chunin, hand-picked by the Seventh Hokage, after he had already bested Sunagakure's top genin Yodo in the Chunin Exams. Like both parents he is a natural tactician, reading an opponent's patterns to stay several steps ahead; he later claimed to have held a dozen countermeasures ready in case Boruto used the Rasengan.

A capable shurikenjutsu practitioner, Shikadai also handles Wind Release, managing his mother's Sickle Weasel Technique, though the more advanced forms demand her folding fan and tire him quickly. As part of his generation's Ino-Shika-Cho he trains in cooperation ninjutsu that syncs the three clans' hiden, and in the anime he can perform fuinjutsu to restrain a target's movements. His clan techniques let him bind foes by joining his shadow to theirs, forcing them to copy his motions or freezing them outright, and he can stretch the technique's reach to snare several targets at once. Years on, he refines his shadows into casting nets and cages able to immobilise dozens of Human God Trees in a single stroke.
