Yakumo Kurama

Character

Appearance

Yakumo keeps her brown hair long, falling straight down one side while the other is worked into a braid. A clip bearing two round shapes holds part of it in place, and her eyes are a soft light brown. Her everyday outfit centers on a pink robe fastened with a matching sash that carries a pair of front pockets, worn over baggy violet trousers with red mesh armour beneath and orange sandals below. During her lessons with Kurenai her clothing shifted to layered kimono-style tops, one sleeve long and the other short, cinched by a broad pink sash over the same red mesh, paired with a pale blue skirt and a brown headband.

Personality

In her early years she was gentle and full of hope, throwing herself into private training with the dream of becoming a kunoichi who leaned on illusions alone. That optimism collapsed once Kurenai persuaded her to abandon the path. She retreated into silence and gloom, speaking little and convinced that the whole village saw her as dead weight. Under the sway of the darker self living inside her, she poured her thoughts of revenge into her paintings and lashed out at anyone she took to be a threat.

History

Yakumo stands among the final heirs of the Kurama Clan's main branch, the heiress of a house famed for its illusions. A weak body kept her from the physical rigors of a ninja's life, so her father asked the Third Hokage to arrange a private teacher. That teacher was Kurenai Yuhi, herself a genjutsu specialist. Encouraged by the example of Rock Lee, who thrived despite lacking ninjutsu and genjutsu, Yakumo trusted that concentrating on her own illusions could carry her forward. Kurenai disagreed and eventually refused to continue, urging the girl to seek another road.

When Yakumo would not accept it, Kurenai sealed her power away on the Third's instructions. The reason lay in a second personality named Ido, a malicious presence born from the darkest part of her mind that could seize control and aim her gifts at wrecking the village. The entity broke through the seal and conjured a blaze that consumed the family home, killing her parents, though Yakumo came to believe the Hokage had ordered the fire to be rid of her. Her inherited talent ran extraordinarily deep: her illusions could force a victim's body to suffer whatever the mind endured, making them lethal, and she often channeled them through her artwork, at one point blanketing all of Konoha in a single illusion. Years of grief nearly ended in her own death when she returned for vengeance, only for Naruto Uzumaki and Kurenai to reach her, help her overcome Ido, and show her that her teacher had cared all along.
